My Dad has told me that it was only 400, is this true?

No, according to recentish figures from the dvla there are 435 registered in the UK of which 373 are still taxed

first built in 1995 there were 2500 built in creme yellow for wordwide sales.2500 in black for worldwide sales.500 in metallic emerald green for w/wide sales and 2000 for sale in the us only. in creme yellow or black.1995 was the only year it was badged as the T-5R.in 96 and 97 it was badged 850R.
