Finally had the chance to sort through some spotlights that I've had for a while, and try them out on the car. Still undecided on where to mount them though:

Option A:
http://x-files.serveftp.com/paulharkerdesign/personalgallery/albums/Amazon/DSC00776.sized.jpg
& with covers:
http://x-files.serveftp.com/paulharkerdesign/personalgallery/albums/Amazon/DSC00777.sized.jpg

Option B:
http://x-files.serveftp.com/paulharkerdesign/personalgallery/albums/Amazon/DSC00779.sized.jpg
& with covers:
http://x-files.serveftp.com/paulharkerdesign/personalgallery/albums/Amazon/DSC00778.sized.jpg

The brackets are the proper 123GT items, but the lights are Lucas 5 3/4" rather than the 123GT Hella 7" lights as the 123GT ones I have are in pretty rough condition.

I also have a 123GT relay & fusebox board with a load of wiring still attached. Can anyone tell me where the board would be mounted (I think it's on an inner wing?), and how the wiring is routed in the engine bay and also out to the lamps? Given that they have their own fusebox, would power be taken direct from the main battery cable mounting on the starter motor?

Thanks!

I really think go for it! I prefer them closer to the head lights though.

Here is a link to a 123GT posting with pics. May give you clues for your wiring harness...
http://amazon.forum.bilia.se/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=2933
Only thing is that its all in Swedish though.

Hope this helps if someone doesn't come along and tell you exactly how to do it!

Those engine bay pics are great - should be able to position the board in exactly the right place now. Much appreciated! I see it also has the voltage regulator thingy for the dynamo on the end of the relay board too - I'd been wondering what went there as mine has just the fusebox, relays & their wiring.

Just been working through the thread and there are links to some really close up pics later on too :)

I agree, by the headlights looks nicer and dosent clutter up the grill. Personally I wouldnt put the covers on, think it ruins the look. Nice pics on that site too.

I'll be using the covers for stone chip protection to the lenses, rather than for aesthetics. However they are the correct ones for those lights.

SWMBO has decreed that option A is acceptable whilst option B apparently makes it look like one of the characters in the CARS film...

I think I now know where the wiring from the relay board to the lights runs, but can anyone tell me where the power and input (i.e. from the switches) wires run?

Also where are the fog & spot light switches mounted on a 123GT?

Thanks!

Further investigation has shown that the RHD and LHD cars had the wiring located differently due to the position of the bonnet release cable. I've managed to get some pics showing the correct location for RHD, but the wiring on the car in question didn't look factory.

Also, anyone know where the switches were located on the dash?? Pics would be fantastic!

Hello. As far as I recall, there were a couple of pull down toggle switches (white plastic/bakerlite) on the underside edge of the dash, to the right of the steering wheel and i think further right than the ignition. If you look on the underneath of the dash, there's a 'joddled' (is that the right word?) flat piece of metal into which was set two switches. Pull down for 'on', push up for 'off'.

I'm sure a GT owner can provide pictures!

Dragging up an old thread but was searching the subject and have a few questions on the topic...

Have a pair of chrome Hella 186 spots mounted on the center section of the bumper which I have yet to have wired up to work, presume they are old as I can't find them for sale new.

Have checked around for sev marchals and lucas and noticed quite a lot of sets are being sold with one spot and one fog lamp. If this combination is mounted which goes to what side and do they work independantly of each other or together ?

The 123GT had a fog and spot/driving light fitted. Fog to nearside and spot to offside. They had 2 pull switches under the dash the same as the switch for the shelf light. There are holes both side for rhd and lhd car so an extra one needed to be drilled.
Local rules need to be applied as far as wiring goes but lots of cars over there have moose spotting sets. Check back through Roberth's threads on the Swedish Amazon forum for Marchal pics. He gets out in the snow a lot, or at least he used to.

I think from memory the fog light and spot light were operated independently (one switch each). Many people replaced them with driving lights that came on with main beam; particularly useful before the halogen headlights came in.

Those Marchals look great. You can get nice covers designed for the GT size of spot light here:

If you sell your Hella 186s let me know please as I'm after an old pair of Hellas.

Kind regards

oh yeah I remember that one..the forum changed server i think and a lot of old posts and pics got lost..I joined on that one after they changed but my impression is it's not very active.

I was guessing along the lines that the fog was on the nearside and spot on off side..fogs got a wider beam to show up the edges of the road, need that here with the forest roads and no street lighting.

There's a few sets of sev marchals being sold on egay usa by a Finish guy but he's asking up and over £200 a set, mind you some are paying that for the Lucas ones.

I know the GT's are rare but can't see what all the fuss is about, there's only a few differences between a 122s and a GT ..basically the key ring lol

you would be surprised on the differences and how to tell a fake from the real thing also the engine spec can differ depending on the country it was sold in but a 123GT is the crem de le crem of Amazons and if you have driven one then you would say i gotta have one , i ve driven a few and none drive the same as a GT suttle differnces and the feel of the ride is best way to explain it they just hug you and say come motor with me ( blame my dad i drove his and i was hooked fingers crossed i will be picking my GT up within the month and canny wait )

other amazons are fantastic aswell , they just drive and respond slighly different .

ok well been a bit spoiled with mine as it was sorted when I bought it..new bushes refurbed B20/ E-head and reconned SU's /overdrive and somons sports system..everything feels nice and tight, handles well and engine pulls like a steam train..goes like sh*t off a shovel for it's age..can't really see what more a GT has to offer really....maybe reclining seats ?..got them lol

Something else I was looking at was to fit a rear fog/spot lamp on the rear for a reversing light, like the Lucas boot mounted type most but not keen on drilling holes, maybe bumper fitment would be better ?

I think it may be helpful to review just what makes up a 123 GT. See the table below. In the first column I have listed the "extras" found on the 1967/68 123 GT that set it apart from the 122S. In the second column I have shown those things that by 1969 were also found on the 122S. In the last column I show what was unique on the 1969 123 GT.

The following footnotes apply to the spreadsheet:

* According to Anders Ditlev Clausager in his book, "Essential Volvo 120 Series and 1800", in the South African market where the 123 GT was not marketed the B18B (115 HP) engine was available in both 4 door sedans and station wagons as the 122S-B18B model.

** By 1968 the collapsing steering wheel and brake servo were standard on other models.

*** Although the 123 GT model is not found in the 1969 parts catalog, it is clear that it was available as a "Special Edition or Type 5314. In addition, at least in Switzerland it was marketed as 123 GT.

As we know, all of the 1969 Amazons had the following new or additional features besides the B20 engine: dual circuit brake system, alternator, locking steering wheel with ignition on the steering column, improved brake servo, laminated windshield. Likewise, there were a number of trim features that were removed from the 1969 Amazons: chrome hood nose strip, chrome rain gutter trim, chrome on emergency brake handle, chrome bumper guards, door pockets, arm rest in rear seat. The 1969 123 GTs were also lacking these trim items although at least in Switzerland, the chrome bumper guards were included on the 1969 123 GT.

I hope this helps answer your questions and suggest that you post it to your Amazon list. Again, please let me know if you have questions or comments.

Jerry (article poster)

just thought i would share the specifications on the 123GT as they are sought after and some get confused on what spec and when it was availiable :) just to help clarify for others to make it known all credits are to the original poster ( jerry ) on net for this

History: The 1967 (type M) Volvo 120 series model line up saw the first all new two door 123GT model released by Volvo. Press Release here. This was the first 120 series model with the B18B 115hp engine from the P1800 series. Although 1968 saw the engine used in all 122S models, the 1967 123GT to some, was the unique stand out model. The 123GT model was continued in 1968 (type P) and a 123GT with a B20B engine was available in 1969 (type S) albeit with very limited numbers and to certain European countries only. But only the B18B version of the 123GT was homologated for racing with FIA (recognition No. 5152). Although the B20B 122S was homologated (recognition No. 5313) the B20B 123GT was not.

Production: It is very hard to know how many of each year model was ever produced, let alone the total number. Most GTs were assembled in Sweden but a very small number were assembled in Halifax, Canada and Ghent, Belgium. Volvo did not keep a record of numbers produced in either Sweden or those two countries. But delivery information is available for the Swedish built cars from Volvo in Sweden.

Although the popular opinion has been that roughly the same number of GTs were produced in 1967 and 1968, it is obvious from the register so far that the 1967 production was by far the largest. With well over 500 cars on the register, over 400 of them are 1967 'M' models. A grand total of about 1,500 cars has been talked about. A letter to Volvo sent by Bob Taylor, a Volvo enthusiast from Australia, in 1986 got back this response from them. I have a feeling that the number might even be less than that, making the 123GT model perhaps the second rarest production model after the P1900. I have been putting together a worldwide 123GT chassis number register (click on REGISTER banner below) to get an idea of how many GTs are out there. If you would like to add another one please email me the details and photos of the car. If yours does appear and you would like to add or correct an entry or send me some photos of your car, then please email me.

Latest Count as per register:
1967 x 505 cars
1968 x 84 cars
1969 x 12 cars
1970 x 1 car

GTs in Australia: Less than fifty 1967 and 1968 Volvo 123GT cars were imported and sold in Australia. Of those some 35 survive today. At about A$4,000.00, they were an expensive car at the time, compared to the local product. I have never seen a 1969 or 1970 GT here in Australia. Period Review

GTs in Europe: Some 123GTs were built/assembled in Belgium. These have S numbers 5118 and 5297 on the ID plate. A Swiss Advert of the time refers to two spot lights and only one mirror (see picture at bottom of advert) While a German Advert shows the GT with Talbot fender mirrors and driving lights.

GTs in USA: According to the Volvo Publication "Service Hints" printed in 1968 by Volvo, Inc. New Jersey, the 123GT was not imported to the USA but that some cars were imported by private individuals. Also, there are quite a few Canadian GTs that, over the years, have crossed the border to the USA.

Thanks  Great read.. a genuine GT has a rarity value agreed but think the prices people are selling them for is well OTT.

I'm a person who likes to keep things genuine as possible on classics and like period parts and accessories (the fun is in the hunting down the parts) but not worried about the engine transplant to a B20 on mine or the fact if it originally had overdrive or not just happy it's got it. A tacho/oil pressure/amp guage are on my to do list but there's no way I'm trying to make it a "fake" GT . Love the bit with the "go faster" wiper arms and blades (p/n 672562 & 672563) lololol

Performance wise I don't think a GT has much more than mine either.

GT "Gran Turismo" versus S "Sport".. would be an interesting thread hmmmmm!!

First of all - you can't equate a '67 and a '68 model.

Errors/comments (spreadsheet):

- '67 models did not have collapsible steering column. Neither did a '67 123GT

- Brakeservo - was an option (has been all the way, even on front drum brake Police Amazons) and standard on the 220s from 1965

- Under dash lights - All Amazons, all years had that (passenger side).

- What are "chrome fittings on front seat" - if not the recliners??

- Laminated windshield - was standard since introduction (1957)

- chrome bumper guards: Well, at first Volvo tried to "facelift" the 1969 model by removing them - but (mainly Swedish) customers asked why and they were refitted - 1. print run of 1969-model brochures shows the Amazon without - 2. print run - guess what..

This is a nice sum up - why?

Because with p/ns mentioned it should be clear to those not familiar with Volvo parts number system -

6xxxxx numbers are production parts number series - so they "make" the car,

2xxxxx numbers are accessory part/set numbers,

- that, here's a clear 'picture' of what mainly makes a 123GT "unique":

It's filled with accessories ;) (- that anybody else could walk in to a Volvo dealer and buy off the shelf).

Comments:

...(while some European markets got two of the same light)
Ehh?.. Of course - different countries had different laws - For instance Denmark - where it's not allowed to have a single of any kind of extra light and so forth.

...Alternator. 1 (different regulators depending on year).
Ehh..? No, regulator differs according to with or without radio/radio communication-installations.

...Reclining front seats with chrome type adjusters. (not mentioned in 120 spare parts book). (p/n 277386 & 277387)
Again - what are "chrome type adjusters"? - if not just a mix up of what really is the accessory-recliners?..

The Volvo Amazon was introduced in 1957 - in 1967 Volvo wanted to celebrate 10 years with the model - so they made a Christmas tree model..

And ever since, well.. in classic cars, in cat-/dog-/horse breeds/philatelist/antiques/whatever - people just love bed time storys.. myths and dreams..

Fact is as a factory built model they are rare just don't see why people think they are worth the huge difference in price..performance wise (which is the bit that counts to me) they're not faster than a 122s....me thinks .

The best parts from the GT's goodies list imho are the auxiliary lights (along their associated wiring & mounting brackets etc) and the Recaro Kieper recliners*. Even if other lamps are used, the GT relay board is especially useful for a tidy, period appropriate installation, as its components match the rest of the OEM relays & main fusebox.

However I really don't understand why the GT tachos & steering wheels fetch such big money for '60s boy racer stuff that I feel looks so out of place in such an obviously '50s designed car. They would be far more appropriate to a clearly '60s design such as the 140. As for the GT mirrors, yes they are nice, but not nice enough to pay silly money for when there are plenty of other decent, appropriate period correct mirror styles that are still available brand new for sensible prices.

An excellent accessory that they didn't load onto the GT though is the earlier style optional headrests*, which are so much more comfortable than the later (also factory fitted) ones.

*Which is why I have these on my heap. Can't stand the design of the OEM lamp covers though - would be fine (& highly appropriate) on a rally car but on a road car, they just look silly. Plain black ones were also half the price...

In other news, I'll try to remember to take my medication next time, and thus suppress my inner Victor Meldrew.

Btw CVS - do you have any info regarding versions of the GT fogs that came with yellow lenses? That's what I have on mine, and aside from the lens colour, are identical in to the other spare set of GT lamps (with regular clear lenses) that I also have. Wondered if they are Volvo specified, or just a different version of the same lamp that Hella produced for another application.

Hm.. The 1967 123GTs that left Torslanda for the Swedish market most likely had the clear ones fitted - the export and the later 1968- GTs was most likely fitted accordingly to the country's rules or buyers order etc. (As most where 'finnished' at the dealership, not factory).

Yellow lenses are not special for Volvo - but maybe it appears so for UK enthusiasts? Haven't given it much thought.. Hella, Bosch, Marchal etc. - all made clear and yellow lenses - and did it from way before there was an Amazon on the road...

Have I missed a point in your question? :)

On your other comments - I agree a lot.. Considering even that there are so much other a lot more interesting/fun/nice/useable original accessories out there for the Volvos/Amazons - it's amazing that the GT stuff even attracts non-GT-owners..

- orig. blankets,
- headrests (as you mention),
- petrol/gas cans,
- roof racks,
- tunnel trays,
- extra parcel shelf (LHD drivers side),
- radios,
- lights,
- seatbelts (rear),
- tray for luggage room,

...and so on!

Nope, not at all :) - very useful and confirms what I'd suspected. Yellow isn't normal for fogs over here, and as far as I know, all the UK market GTs had clear lenses, so looks like mine are just the same model of light unit, rather than the yellow lenses being specified by Volvo.

I'd forgotten that the rear belts were an accessory / option, as my car has had them in all the time that I have known it (since 1994). Thinking of parcel shelves & other storage solutions, I have an idea to upgrade the parcel shelf which if it works out as planned, should be a huge improvement, and also look as though it was done by Volvo.

Talking under dash? :)

Do you know of Volvos own solution?

I'd seen pics, but nothing as clear as that diagram - many thanks! Didn't realise that they were from Volvo though - had assumed they were aftermarket.

I think Rob, Amazon Cars, had one of those on their stall at the BKV. It wasn't in the best condition but fixable I think. Don't know if it was sold. After-market ones might have been available from Kamei. They did similar ones for Beetles, including a 1 piece full sized version.

Adapting a LHD shelf to a RHD car is something I've considered but clearance might not be good for someone with short legs and big feet and who likes to sit close to the wheel.........

It is a good idea to think "volvo-ish"..

Volvo was a very 'smart' company for it's time - they used sub contractors in a huge number - it was often so, that Volvo kept an eye on the small entrepreneurs who found 'smart' accessorie-solutions etc. - if they turned succesfull - Volvo did then of course made a deal with the entrepreneur and that way it became a benefit for both: Volvo had the most fantastic supply chain/spare parts logistics set up - and Volvo saved on RD* for accessories.

Often you will see items like this parcel (glove?) shelf - followed by an instruction/installation manual printed by Volvo.

Well I gone and bought me the wiring kit and switch so I can in the near future hook up my front spotlamps. I can have them wired up so they work off the main beam but have to have the switch as a *power off* or to work independantly off the switch. Will check the relays I have in the car, I have three, one for the overdrive, one for indicators and another for lights but it looks a bit different to others I have seen. Have a spare original light relay but it has more contacts than the one I have in the car.
Will take a few pics and post them up soon so the experts can advise me :lightbulb:

The two relays mounted together are the main beam flash, and the reverse lights. Can't remember which way round they are though. The indicator flasher unit is up under the dashboard.

Namely! - the round one (which is same as for OD) is the back up/reverse lights - the squarish one is main beam.
...
..should I use this ?

It is always good to wire aux.lights through a relay.

A 240 relay - for lights. It's just a more "sophisticated" one than the one in the Amazon.

Googla lite på "ljusrelä" ;)

It's what's known as a flip/flop relay for doing dip/main as you flip back the lever. The similar R201.115 has only 2 single connections instead of the pairs at the right of the picture. If you're willing to lose the flash facility on your indicator stalk you can use it in conjunction with this relay for dipping in place of the floor switch.

.....Steering Wheel Special GT. (p/n 672596) - GT Horn Button (not mentioned in 120 spare parts book)....

Arrhh!! :D

Do you know the feeling that there was something wrong but you couldn't point to what?..

I've had it like this with this post (the above from where the quote comes from*) and besides my previous comments to it - the subconscious mind couldn't let it pass and has been dealing with it for a while now..

*BOOM* today..

The horn button IS mentioned - of course it is! - it's Volvo!

There it is - #32 - Group 3 Electrics, page 17

Ahhh... Peace of mind now.. ;)

*And 1800necwinner - it's NOT aimed at you..

- chrome bumper guards: Well, at first Volvo tried to "facelift" the 1969 model by removing them - but (mainly Swedish) customers asked why and they were refitted - 1. print run of 1969-model brochures shows the Amazon without - 2. print run - guess what..

Well... was going through some stuff anyway - so - here it is:

1969: Volvo photoshopping!

Ohh.. You didn't think that I don't know the difference between a standard 1957-67 steering wheel and the GT one, did you? :)

See, what you (and probably the writer of that article you quoted) failed to notice is, that the diagram is of the horn button - not the steering wheel - it's all Volvo-logic: Steering wheel belong in group 6, Front axle and Steering gear - whereas the horn button belongs in group 3, Electrics..

You can't win ;)
