xc90 unknown noise

Hi, recently i have noticed a distinctive "whirring or grating" type noise almost like a fan or pump starting up which seems to occur every few minutes or so and lasts for no more than a couple of seconds when driving my xc90.
any ideas what this may be, is it normal or is something on the way out, thanks !!

did you find out what it was? I just picked up a new D5 auto and have a drumming noise from time to time, like a pump starting and lasting also a couple of seconds. Quite noticeable.
Seems to start at deceleration and before completely stopping.

Sounds like the Air Con pump (compressor) coming in. All Volvos' seem to be particularly noisy.
Turn off the Air Con and see if it stops.

thanks. Took it to the dealer who thinks it is the brake pad. Nothing to worry about. Will insist for a swap at 3000 mi service if still there.
