LPG, ignition and the BIG BANG

Posted Jan 10th, 2017 at 21:04 by BrianH

I converted the 240 GL estate to LPG through the Volvo club 15 years ago at about 150k.
Cost 1254
Well worth it if you do the mileage. 27mpg on petrol and lpg up to 42 mpg due its cheap cost, currently 48.9 per ltr. About 14PPMILE
It always had an intermitant back fire destroying the plastic air filter and tubes.
So I had the distributer rebuilt and got NGK Blue HT leads from America, about two yers ago. It was an amazing difference. Much more reliable. No backfiring....Until today....The big one.... BANG. Off came the rubber bellows (only)(CI petrol injection configeration).
I was lazy, for weeks now I had the odd small back fire which the back fire valve took care of and I carried on.
Today was different. An hour and a half from home.....BANG. Dead stop.
I knew weeks ago that I should have changed the distributer cap and the dissy, clean the HT leads and changed the plugs. Now I had to do them on the side of the road in Luggershall town, Wiltshire. I was prepared, all the bits aboard.
Took over an hour. Had two people peer into the engine bay, one offered to help.
Problem solved as Ed China says.
Moral..............Don't put it off!!!!
