I spent most of the day working to put the head back on the car today. I bought and erected a gazebo so that the forecast rain would not interfere with operations. The head actually came from a 7 series car so I used the blanking plug from my old head. I fitted a new timing belt and fan belts. The supplied PS pump belt was too big so I had to refit the old one which is OK for the moment. I scraped loads of gunk off radiator hose connections and installed new radiator hoses. New head skimmed and being reassembled

I got hold of another head from not too far away which also gave me the excuse for a pleasant run into Norfolk to pick it up. I had it skimmed yesterday and this evening I installed new valve stem seals on all the intake valves. Tomorrow I should put in the shims, buckets and the cam although I probably need to remove a couple of spots of rust first which the cam has picked up while it sat on the shelf at the breakers.

The head came off with little drama on Thursday night although it did have a clogged block drain ****. That is apart from the coolant coming out of the exhaust manifold as I unbolted it. That was a bit strange I thought. Come Friday morning and I could see coolant had been coming out of the head somewhere around #4 exhaust valve stem. I took it to the guy to skim the head and he confirmed my suspicion that the head was not repairable. The head gasket itself had been fine, so where did all that burning...
