    Amazon: Crankcase Breather Leaks

    Perhaps a quick question. Has anyone had a problem with the crankcase breather on the side of the B20 engine leaking where it attaches to the crankcase? After driving there is a line of oil leading down from the point of attachment. It is bolted in tight. Happens with any type of engine running. It has been leaking since I removed it for cleaning (this was for a problem that lives in this orphaned thread: http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showth...ht=idling+high . Positive Pressure in crankcase that is still unresolved). It was not leaking before I removed it and when oil squeezed out of everywhere else. Issue is not related to PCV configuration. Currently the breather is venting to atmosphere. Smoke goes out and air in, I could breathe through it (blech!) if lung flame was a worry.

    I don't see mention in my searches. I could always seal it with a compound. Is there a better suggestion?

    I had the same problem after a recent engine rebuild. I took it off and cleaned the o ring and haven't had any problems since. On another note the breather on mine has a smaller diameter pipe into the crankcase and has an extra small section of fuel hose round it to make it fit in.

      Gothamus;

      B20 Oil Trap has a sealing ring (included in engine gasket set), and there should be no crankcase pressure, so should not leak there.

        pull and place

        I am going to take it off and check it tonight. Last night I was busy building a snow barrier around my car to keep the salt machine guns from hitting my car. If I had the energy after that I would have been able to get to work. Pretty good seeing as the cleared snow was hiding the tires by the afternoon. The snow on the rear, from roof to end of trunk lid, slid off in one piece. It was solid and took some hacking. No one can back into her today! Ice wall in front and back.

        Since the breather becomes a smoke stack when at certain throttle, I don't see this being pressure. It looks like it needs a seal. Thanks for the input. I will follow up tonight with examination results.

          It didn't and doesn't have part no. 419805, the sealing ring. I can fashion something and order if needed. I have seen that sheet before but didn't take note of the ring.

            sealed

            Just to follow-up. With snow and electrical work taking up my time, last night I finally got around to pulling the breather off. I found the washer inside the hole. I think it might have been a little far in. I pulled it out and cleaned it. I replaced it but did not push it all the way in but let the breather push it in as far as it went. This morning when I moved it I did not have any sign of oil leaking.

            Thanks for your input!

              Good to get a solution, brilliant, even keeping the snow clearers away. should you feel you need a new washer, here is a link in the States and cheap as chips
              Best wishes Jamie
