Ok so I did the job today, as soon as I took the throttle body off I found a problem straight away, as I removed it a huge chunk of coke came with it and as I looked through the body I could immediately see that the butterfly was obstructed to much that it would only move about 5 degrees out of the 90 it's meant to. The coke build up was about 15mm at its thickest and continued up into the inlet manifold a few inches from what I could tell. Anyhow I set about removing this massive build up and cleaning it as best as I could with what I had to hand, stuck it back in and it does seem a lot better, however still not 100% cured. I did the fine to medium sanding to prevent the butterfly from sticking aswell but the temperature sensor appears to be too delicate to go at hard enough to clean properly. I think that I will still replace the unit to be sure but will repeat the sanding process before I fit a new one. Here are some photos of my effort.

Hi, Thanks to Clan. I am new to this forum since reading your advice last night. I bought a secondhand 2.0D s40 56 plate and since getting it 1 year ago have had problems with starting it. It has been sluggish to start so I initially bought a new battery, then the alternator packed up so hoped that was the problem cured, but now it is getting worse and turning over loads of times before it starts. I was advised that it might be an injector problem so yesterday took it to an injection specialist who said nothing came up on the computer diagnostics and pressures were good (or something like that) he thought it could be a faulty starter motor draining too much power, taking it away from sensors. I had left the car there last night then read your forum. I have bought it home (no new starter motor yet) and have taken off the throttle body,it was sticking, I have cleaned it and rubbed the edges of the flap with wet and dry, now its no longer sticking and am about to put it back together, fingers crossed I won't need a new starter motor. Just want to say thanks in advance and let you know later if it starts. (Such an easy job, no experience in cars, just followed pictures on another forum, my day job is a nurse, my husband well impressed)

Sorry as I said new to this, I don't know what a Like Button is.
All back together, cleaned, sanded down and it started okay, some hesitation still though. It is always worse starting in the mornings so I will see how it is tomorrow. Might still have to get new starter motor, hope not. |

Oh no, I have the same problem here, the car really struggled to start again this morning, I was really chuffed yesterday that I did it all myself only to find this morning that it hasn't made any difference. Oh well it didn't cost anything only the price of the Carburettor cleaner. I think I will now have to buy a new starter motor and try that as the garage suggested it could be that. Not sure I will attempt to fit it though.
