No matter how useful his videos are and comments are....there are people that are not so good has others. This is when the knowledge enters. HELP, not remind its an hold post.

Its how i think its how i see the forum......Count how many start by..I KNOW ITS AN HOLD QUESTION....

WHAT IS THE EASIER WAY to answer????

Not challenging you, Id like to get a reference for my own use, and see if volvo have any logical reasoning.
My late 2004 V70 D5 lists 5w40 for our temp range and makes no prohibitive statements of those sort, so Im intrigued! 👍

I've chopped a bit off about the viscosity, not going back out now. My manual that came with the car, not Haynes, states B4 as you advised me a few weeks ago when the car was sounding like a bag of spanners.

Ta!
Yes, same as mine, thats what puzzled me, it would make no sense to recommend diiferent oil for two vehicles with the same engine, hence why I would like to see an xc70 manual, as if they do, I would like go try and get a handle on it!

Fairly sure the owners handbook is v70 and xc70. Says on front cover I think.

Good point, I think youre right!

Theres a chance the oil spec confusion (this is speculation) is what has led to engines such as yours and others getting a rattly top-end, if the '5's have been used for an elongated timeframe. Volvo may well have changed tolerances and materials in euro 4 and beyond to tolerate/make use of a5/b5, which of course the euro 3 doesn't have. Once the damage is done theres no going back without renewal of engine components, but using a different oil can help prevent further degradation and maximise protection, keeping the status quo.

It made me laugh so don't feel bad..... I'm assuming that making me laugh was your intention?

Callous definition unkind, cruel, and without sympathy or feeling for other people:
Your description of me as callous sounds a little.... Erm what's the word? Oh yes. Callous. :)

Anyway, back to this gripping, enlightening and brand new oil discussion which is revealing all new information which the forum has never seen before.

I might start a rival thread called, "What colour are your tyres?"
Easily as useful.

AndyV7o Jul 12th, 2018 08:17

Well maybe I shant defend you in the future...
Anyhoo, yes it may be an age old problem, not everyone is good at using the search function or knowing which thread is properly relevant, search functions always leave a lot to be desired too.
Thing is, theres a lot of people on here using the wrong oil, so why not help people.
By the sounds of it clan may have been servicing lots of peoples cars with the wrong oil, and he's generally a more trusted, learned member!
We're never too old to learn, and should never assume we know it all or that people are stupid for asking.

Imagine going to see the doctor and they said 'Ffs, will people stop coming to me with the same old bloody problems, can you not just use google for christ sake'

You've met my doctor then Andy?

Joking aside, i hadn't realised there were so many different grades of oil - perhaps grades isn't the right word here - to enable "modern" engines to achieve emissions values.
Reading between the lines, it would appear accelerated wear could result, even when using the correct oil because it's so thin. That obviously wouldn't be good for the engine or the emissions!

Given the technology we have these days, is it beyond the engineers at Volvo (and everywhere else) to design engines that still use 10W40? If they've designed an engine that is so critical as to whether the "right" oil is used to produce (or not) the correct level of emissions, i think they've got it wrong.
