What an interesting story Jack - I've just read it through.

I tend to agree with your conclusion that the buyer was probably genuine but has decided that fairly old Volvo ownership isn't for him and is trying to sell it on without too much loss. I say that because although your motor car looks very nice to us Volvo blokes, they don't seem to sell well so the seller isn't likely to make much (if anything). I can see there is a similar motor car (Volvo S90 2.9 Automatic Luxury Edition Only 86,000 Miles!!) for sale (by a dealer, but taken as a PX with no warranty) on eBay at £1,990, so I doubt that there is any profit in flipping large and thirsty 25 year old Volvo motor cars.

It is a bit wrong for the seller to imply he has owned your old motor car for a long time, but he doesn't appear to have told any untruths, although he may have implied some. If he has just decided a 25 year old Volvo isn't for him and is trying to recoup what he can then one can't blame the chap for trying to make the situation sound positive.

After less than two days, Alan? I'm afraid that you and 'C J.' both are very generously much more charitable than I!

Regards, John.

Good morn John,

I think you may have missed this addendum to my post above:
Addendum: I was intrigued by this so I asked the seller how long he had owned the Volvo, he replied a week and later added:
... my wife and I buy and sell (privately) you can see our previous sales, we also have an MX5 for sale. The advert is verbatim of the handover received from the last owner...

... so, I was wrong: the chap is just flipping the motor car quickly for a profit. Does that make the couple a motor trader? I don't know. I suppose a downside is the Volvo now has had 3 previous owners on the log book and not two.
So I was being too generous to the seller.

I see a quick email to the revenue re undeclared earnings in his near future...

Well, as has been said, the car now belongs to the chap who bought it from me last week, and what he does with it is his business.

I do feel that if he's looking to turn a quick profit he might struggle - it's a lovely car, and to a Volvo enthusiast it has a value, but otherwise it's just another old car. I think I did actually make that very point to him in the course of our conversation.

Whatever, I wish him well. He was friendly, fair and prompt in his dealings with me, and that's all I can really say about it.

Cheers

Jack

I agree entirely Jack.

Good fortune to the chap, but I think he may struggle to make more than a few hundred pounds on the S90. From my brief research the 1990s motor cars seem to top out at about 2 grand.

I did, Alan, and I apologise. Regards, John.

I don't know much about selling on eBay, but I think the car might do very well if offered for auction with a specialist dealer like Matthewsons. Potential purchasers at such events are much more likely to be knowledgeable enthusiasts who would appreciate a car's value. If it was so offered, I would not be surprised if the vendor were to double their money.

It only needs one person who appreciates a car for what it is and really wants it ...

Regards, John.

Absolute dung heap of a car. £500 tops!

There used to be a way to find out the reserve.

I go away for a week and miss all this! Wow, he doesn't mess around does he?!

I'd assumed the ebay advert was placed by our very own CaptJack! Hope you were happy with what you got for it CJ - if it had been a different colour I'd have been very interested as you know.

 Bit harsh there! It's not a showroom model for sure, but it's not that bad!
