if it was untrained me who was driving, my wife would say WTF are you doing ?
can't you see that lorry doesn't see you !!

my untrained wife would see that evasive action is required, no matter who's fault it may be.

a bit of commonsense and driving experience is needed and this is what the traffic cop does not have, he should be put off traffic duties to safeguard the public.

Having watched the clip a couple of times I first thought it was 50/50 but when you look closer you can see the copper made a lot of mistakes.

The officer spots the lorry on the inside lane and moves out to the 3rd lane. All good and sensble. At the same time as moving over the officer starts to increase speed around the bend going from 117 to 130MPH, bad move. He also sees the lorry indicate right and does not react at all. He should know he will be traveling at least 70MPH faster than the lorry. He should have dropped his speed down a bit before passing. Could the officer see what was in front of the HGV? What was the wind like on the day?

They do pass a sign for the roundabout, what was on it I dont know but it does look like for some reason the lorry driver thought he was suppsed to move out to the 3rd lane. It is also possible he wanted to **** off that speeding BMW driver but I dont think so.

He clearly should have had the blues and twos on at those kind of speeds

Very old footage but thought I would add my view

The fact is that only two people know what really happened that day. Had I been behind the wheel of either vehicle involved I might have felt able to comment (whether I would wish to is another matter entirely). Otherwise, any comment that I might make would be just another subjective opinion.

On the other point regarding the Officer's 'attitude'. I would have thought that 'assertiveness' was a necessary character trait for any Police Officer. They have to deal in reality with incidents that most of us only read about in books or see on television. Add to that he had just been involved in a high speed collision and, no matter how well trained, would have been suffering from shock as a result, and it is easy to understand his behaviour after the incident.

Let's give this officer a break; after all, as has already been mentioned, this is a very old incident, and it doesn't seem fair to be raking over the coals again after all this time.

Regards, John.

I think you have summed it up well, John and, as stated, we were not there!
