Is your area now served with digital TV broadcast? If so the Volvo unit won't be capable of tuning in to it as its analogue only - Mike

goaa Dec 3rd, 2011 19:22

Great reason not to pay for installed gadgets, sat nav is the same, would you buy a five years old sat nav off ebay, er no, five year old mobile phone, errr no. Five year old V70 with comms pack, worthless fittings now.

Now its a TV that wont receive digital TV.

goaa Dec 3rd, 2011 19:49

well er the thing is i bought the car and this tv etc is with it i am unable to take it out so i guess i just need to learn how to use it while the signal still exists, just a bit of fun i guess.i did just buy a 1950's gramophone and it works fine plays my old beatles 78's

goaa Dec 3rd, 2011 19:56

Thanks clan, that was so funny i went outside to try it tv turned on and a black and white episode of Dads Army was on, did i laugh. old car old programmes.

Clan Dec 3rd, 2011 20:06

Hi Clan, is it possible to upgrade the Tv to digital?

Clan Dec 3rd, 2011 21:10

nothing from volvo yet , perhaps a car hi-Fi shop might have something ..

Gazzza Dec 21st, 2011 18:33

There is posts all over here including mine re up grade to digital. .
Mine worked fine untill the change over I have been looking around my home town and nothing then today a chap with a saab pulled into my mates garage 03 plate as he was busy he was watching tv in the car :lightbulb:

Had a chat and gave me contact details called them up and I have to pop over tomorrow to have a chat with there engineer

Will keep you all informed on whats what :notworthy:

chiptivo Dec 21st, 2011 19:01

Surly just a small 12v digibox, like the bush scart one, rf modulator and rf extender for the remote. Tuck it all behind the dash??

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA300_.jpg

Actually these have a wired IR for rempte, and some already have rf out.

Gazzza Dec 21st, 2011 20:49

Yes but here is the snag normal TV's have an RF socket ( aerial input ) and OR a scart lead so where is it on the volvo ? :lightbulb:

On the V70 its under the rear seat in the cargo bay I have found the aerial connectors and power to it and then a 8pin Din type of plug and with the Din plug out the Screen folds back into the dash same as when I dissconect the power the Screen goes back into the dash :nah:

chiptivo Dec 21st, 2011 21:11

It must have a rf in for uhf 21-69 that a modulator would use somewhere?? As that is how it would of tuned in the analogue channels.?

Gazzza Dec 21st, 2011 21:29

If it was a normal TV yes but the Display in the dash is like a monitor and the TV tuner in the cargo bay is a silver box with NO scart or RF just an 8 pin din

Clan Dec 21st, 2011 22:26

And the signals are carried around on the fibre optic network for the hi-fi / phone / cd /TV systems

I will be very keen to know if this can be done as I have TV in my S60.

I did contact a company asking about this (can't remember who, maybe tvinmotion.co.uk) and they never bothered getting back to me.

chiptivo Dec 21st, 2011 23:00

Seriously....

At some point "The car" picks up the RF signals on some CO-AX that's the point you inject the modulated digibox signal!

THE S60 has the rf anteners in the rear bumper and possibly a electronics box behind the drivers side rear lights??

Maybe a start..

Gazzza Dec 21st, 2011 23:21

Yes I know what you mean but to inject the modulated digibox signal in to an anoluge box and you still getting anolouge out thats the problem its worth a try tho but cant see it my self

thats why on a free view box you need to use a scart lead it bypass's the tuner . . or does it hmmmm got me guessing now

Gazzza Dec 22nd, 2011 00:00

Ok any one who has a free view box at home the aerial from roof goes to the Free view box and then it us's a SCART lead to the TV . . . ?

can any one tune there TV using the TV tuner from 21 to 69 get any pictures from the free view or does it only work on the scart lead using AV1 on the TV

Pictured below of what the unit looks like

http://www.trackside.co.uk/Volvo/Pal.jpg

chiptivo Dec 22nd, 2011 00:40

Some freeview boxes modulate the digital output to a RF frequency. You normally have to select between 21-69.

So you can use Scart, or/and the RF out

Like the RF output on a sky box.

Even though some digiboxes can modulate out, this little box will do it for you, and you choose the frequency.

Simon Jones Dec 22nd, 2011 00:45

I've been thinking along the same lines: find 12v DVB tuner with UHF modulator and then tune the analogue receiver into the same channel. While there are loads of digital car tuners available, they all seem to be RGB or composite video such as this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1605842432...#ht_9324wt_982.

Keen to find out more about the spare DIN socket on the current tuner...

Gazzza Dec 22nd, 2011 00:59

yea guys its getting a bit over the top now rf converters LOL i just got this off ebay only because its the only one that has

1 a proper IR fly lead to mount next to dash to change channels

and

2 comes with a better aerial

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...X:eRTM:GB:1123

and as for the spare din . . . well Ill find out tomorrow when I talk to the engineer thanks to all for you feed back no matter how daft they seem we should be able to crack this now . . just another thought what about connecting it to the Sat nav dvd and use that feed hmmm LOL

http://www.trackside.co.uk/Volvo/Pal1.jpg

Gazzza Dec 22nd, 2011 01:18

Just had an idea if I get my multi meter out and see if the Din plugs are linked to each other . ..

so pin 1 on plug 1 is connected to pin1 on plug 2

Plug 1....................Plug 2
1--------------------1
2--------------------2
3--------------------3
etc

If so did Volvo design it for lets say.. . . . DVD player inputs as optional extra . . just a thought

Right bed time later guys

Gazzza Dec 22nd, 2011 09:36

Well the only Answer I got is they dont make a lead for it at the moment and on about . . . can / bus etc

So it sounds like no company makes a lead for it at the moment that a digital tuner will connect to so guys it looks like we are on are own and that means only one thing time to play

And ill start right now so ill post later on if I find any thing out

Gazzza Dec 22nd, 2011 19:47

Ok been playing all day and first of the spare 8 pin din that I thought was there is in fact a MULTI pin type of thing
( it was dark last night LOL )

I almost got it to work you could see a ghosting image and thats all I could manage :loser:

Right Chipitivo

I think we are going to have to go your route so I will try and now locate one of them Modulators and the good news is off e-bay a guy live's 5 mile from me. .

So now in process of sorting one out more pics and updates to follow but good news is im almost there oh yea the 8 pin din is for the AUDIO surrond sound system and if un-pluged the tv retracts . . .
so instead costing around £300 plus mark. . think we can possable get this to work for around the £100 mark and a little playing around its almost there guys:thumbs_up:

chiptivo Dec 22nd, 2011 19:54

Let us all know how you get on..

I so wish my S60 had a TV pack to mess around with..
Should be a cheap upgrade. The scart one (Bush) has a Remote extender, and I think I have seen a similar one with built in modulator (RF OUT)..

All good, good luck.

Gazzza Dec 22nd, 2011 21:09

Ok as promised below is the Volvo 2002 PAL tuner out of my XC

http://www.trackside.co.uk/Volvo/Pal2.jpg

And below is all the conections

http://www.trackside.co.uk/Volvo/Pal3.jpg

I tried the Radio with the aerial out just to see if it made any differance and all is good its just the feed for the TV

OK below is the one I have NOTE the power feed as this type as the extendable IR sensor Jack which is a MUST

http://www.ugsage.com/Ebay-AU/FV002/FV002-3.jpg

And below what you actually get

http://www.ugsage.com/Ebay-AU/FV002/FV002-7.jpg

But mine also came with this 12v power Aerial all for £70 look around and see if you can get a good deal as this power antena is a must

http://i.ebayimg.com/00/$(KGrHqEOKoY...)IQIg~~_12.JPG

Right thats just about it cant think of any thing else but please keep the feed back coming we will crack this . . I hope

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...X:eRTM:GB:1123

Thought any one got a Reverse camera fitted to the monitor :lightbulb:

Gazzza Dec 23rd, 2011 22:50

OK so with the help of Chiptivo :notworthy:

We now have a working Digital TV

I did not know about these converters I thought it was as per normal but your right they convert Digital and / or composite signal back to RF

The only down side was the guy who lives in Leicester is really in LONDON

AHHHH why do people on ebay do this any way took all day to track down another one local and no joy ended up at maplins for one and only down side is its mains powered 240v where the one of ebay is 9v and plug in mains adaptor ( £20 )

So after playin around I now have a working TV again and its digital  after the festiv season Ill order one from ebay and install the 9v one but tried out the maplin one and it works fine oh and what ever happens you need the one with the power aerial any thing else is a waste of time I may now even upgrade mine to the twin aerial input ones but any way guys we are up and running and it also has DAB radio on it and if you have a ipod thingy so you can connect usb you can watch films . . MEGA also the card slot but a film on the card it will run that as well or even music

Guys im well chuffed thanks for all your input we cracked it any one needs any info let me know right im dog tired time to chill out and have a drink :lightbulb::thumbs_up:

P.S oh yea we are looking at around £100 DIY

chiptivo Dec 24th, 2011 00:08

Well done, and enjoy your beer..

john-sussex Dec 24th, 2011 18:08

This has been very interesting as mine will stop working soon, Feb I think. For those of us (me) who are abit slow could the process ie what to buy and do be put in simple terms.....for a simple person...lol

Gazzza Dec 25th, 2011 01:05

No problems Guys Ill do a write up and take pics as I go so every one who has a TV can get it to work with out being riped off for £600

As soon as I can get the new rf converter ill start some basic soldering and away you go or may be even less

VinceS60D5 Dec 26th, 2011 18:40

Well done, I'm looking forward to the how to so I can convernt mine, pkus if it plays sd card stuff I'll hang fire on ordering my GROM usb unit...

jamie28 Dec 26th, 2011 19:33

I look foward to your post on how to get this to work ,myself and a few other volvo owners are sure to follow in your footsteps

Gazzza Dec 26th, 2011 22:04

OK all its quite simple but as there is a few of these Freeview things out there I cant stress enough to go for the Power aerials I know a few of you are eger to get started but as we have been waiting months for a kit from volvo etc and wire leads to do a convert and people telling me its rip it all out and fit in this system that system and oh no you cant do that we can fit you this system at £600 sir . . . Yea right

Im going to my local car stereo shops here in Leicester when they re open after the festive holidays and I want to try a few out and see whats good and whats bad what works and what dont and the best bit is if there is a few of you who say want a kit putting together I wonder what price we can get them at Up to now i did mine for £90 BUT it would be better with a twin aerial input so hang tight all and hopefully by Jan 9th or sooner ill let you all know

Now what do you all want just TV or some thing to plug a sd card in ? the ones that have a usb port well you can also connect one of them DVD usb drives to watch films as well so lets see what people want can the admin OR mods put a new section on volvo TV as I have only seen mine its a vlovo xc70 and my PAL tuner is under the back seat now if you have one some where else please take a picture and post if its like the picture above then say it its the same as yours Gazza

Below link to you tube just to make sure it works

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2QkvJI2qnuc

hope thats helps

Regards Gazza

john-sussex Dec 26th, 2011 22:21

Hi, Mine is a 06 plate v70 D5, set-up like yours only the tuner is under the second part of the spare wheel cover on the passenger side. Keep up the good work thanks

Gazzza Dec 26th, 2011 22:33

taks a pic and post

use your phone cam if need be just so I can see how many types there is :lightbulb:

VinceS60D5 Dec 27th, 2011 09:47

Mine is an 05 plate S60 - the TV tuner is in the boot behind one of the cover to enable you to change the bulbs in the back light - very easy to get to. I'll post some pics later. Mine looks similar to the above ones though.

My thoughts are to put the aerial on the rear parcel shelf, plus with the batttery being in the boot it'll be very easy to get a power feed from it!

Only question at the moment though, can the channels be changed via the head unit as it currently is or does it need a separate remote?

VinceS60D5 Dec 27th, 2011 10:12

1 Attachment(s)
pic of the tv unit in my car attached, let me know if you want the numbers printed on the sticker on the top.

Gazzza Dec 27th, 2011 14:04

Nice one . . . same as mine so yours will work as well:thumbs_up:

You will set the standard tv in the car to say Channel 26 and the Out put box to 26 . . Then with the magic eye from the free view change chanel its that simple
