Making my ride taller ...
My V70 P11 D5 feels too low. Or is it just my old and knackered back!
I've looked into changing my springs for taller ones (just another 25mm) and now also looking at fitting tyres with a profile of 55 vs the 45s I run that are now worn out. I know about the consequences of runnning the taller tyre (slight optimisism in speed) but cold I keep std shocks if I fit the taller springs? How else could I raise it up a nadge ? THoughts peeps? |
You need to measure your sag first to make sure it's correct.
You may just be in need of fresh standard shocks and springs. |
Thanks Ches. What's sag (not meaning the ex...)? IS that gap between top of tyre and wheel arch? What should it be?

Think you may mean slight pessimism in speed as the increased rolling radius would give more actual road speed when compared with the speedometer - i.e. the speedo would under-read.
I think I know what you mean though about ride height. I always think that for a big car it certainly feels low on the road and I think it has less ground clearance that I'd expect- I can wriggle under some cars I've had but really struggle with the V70...and getting in or out, it does feel very low!...and the number of times I've nearly banged my head on the tailgate.... |
I found mine was scraping when going quick down the back lanes. I've had shocks built and springs to lift it just a touch.
It now drives much better down the lanes and will almost keep up with the 340. I would consider going a bit higher but I prefer mt cars lowered rather than raised. |
I had the same feeling with the V70, but now i have the XC its so much nicer to be able to get in without that old man exhalation...
I would actually quite like the XC to be higher but it may suffer in the corners.(more) ps, the sag on my v70 front springs was at least 30mm before i put new ones on, but it really needs back ones done as its now a bit nose high. |

There'll be a measurement when the car is in the air and one for the car on the ground but unladen. You need to establish if your car is ok but just not high enough for your liking or if the car is actually sagging and needs correcting. |
You can go with larger tire diameter, displayed speed will be lower than actual speed. It does make a difference but still this car and the seats are low to the ground. For the tire, say you have 205/45R16 with a 23.3" dia., a new 205/55R16 will have 24.9" dia so that's an extra 0.8" off the ground. The speedometer will show 105km/h, and the car will go at 112 km/h

buy an xc so much comfort for us old uns:thumbs_up:

Oi Mike, speak for yourself... ;-) I can't change mine now, I've fitted all your cast offs ;-) !!!
Cos I'm daft, can someone tell me whether std shocks (I need some of those too) will fit with springs that are 25mm higher, or do I need different shocks? Does anyone know what the distance from wheel hub centre to lower wheel arch should be? |

(A 25mm reduction in rebound length of the shock will grant an extra 25mm of compression length of the rod so its favourable.) (a minus 30mm drop on some cars require/benefit from a shortened piston rod) |
I went with adjustable rate dampers and stiffer springs to get the lift. There should be a thread on here somewhere showing how I did it. My next mod will be bearing top mounts.

Thats all very digestable food for thought...
4ork, you mention in the post havng those Gaz available and also some Bilsteins that were a reasonable upgrade from stock. Any part numbers? Prices? For front and rear as I have a weeper at each end... ;-( I've been quoted £165 plus the dreaded ;-( for a set of custom made springs 30mm longer than std. How does that sound? Does anyone have any alternatives they know of? |
