Rear park assist service required
Hi Guys
Ok...my first problem with the xc90.... rear park assist service required message and no rear park assist working. Is this fault usually a duff bumper sensor... like it often is in BMWs etc... the radio is 100% ok so I trust its nothing to do wth the other common problem! No towbar and no bangs to bumper... Can anyone confirm if, when the fault is removed (replace sensor for example) does the dash error clear or does it need a dealer trip for a reset? I just read something about there being a recall for parking assist - anyone know the facts? Thoughts? David |
Sounds like a sensor has paced in problem is finding out which one auto reset when OK

BestGear,
This happened to us at the beginning of the year. The dealer takes the car and reads the fault codes. This tells them which sensor is causing the fault. Sadly for us, we were told that the whole set needs replacing and the dealer also has to remove the rear bumper from the car. Afterwards they reset the fault code. Until the reset is undertaken the parking sensors are suspended and don't work at all. I can dig out the cost from my file if you want to know what Clelands charged us. Let me know if you want us to do this. I'm unware of any other solution or DIY fix. Regards, Arianne. |

I will get one and swap it until it is fixed... or buy a DICE interface.... which I am seriously looking to do too! Arianne... I am hoping for an easy fix this time... not sure what dealers get uop to,.... and... I think I will get a DICE interface soon! Many thanks for the advice. David |
Hi,
Not sure what a DICE interface is. Just changing the faulty sensor or fixing whatever is causing the error will not fix the problem without the fault code being reset. I’m sorry I cannot help with the resetting of the fault code- mine was done at an independent garage. Neil |

Thanks for the help and advise Guys.
I just need to track down the correct part number now for a sensor, and hope that with 4 to choose from I pick the faulty one first! Anyone know the part number for a MY05 sensor? TIA David |
Ask Simon at FRF motors

I have found part number 30765108 - anyone confirm for a MY05 this is correct? Seems to be! David |

Hi Neil
There seems to be two numbers that cover 04 and 05, so, given the price, have bought one of each - sure I can sell the other! David |
Just thinking, if you have the “park assist service” on all the time and assuming it will reset itself when you change the faulty sensor all you have to do is change one at a time. If the warning goes off you know you have the right sensor. You have to take the back bumper off which is not as hard as it sounds. There is no way of changing them without removing the bumper. However do not leave the ignition on whilst changing the sensors or having anything else disconnected. This is likely to lead the “park assist service” not re-setting itself and the need to connect to the Volvo system (or buying a reset tool to do it yourself). This is probably were I went wrong. I ended up changing all the sensors just because I got them cheap.
Good luck. Neil |
Thanks for the reply.
I am dissapointed that the bumper has to come off - I hoped that when up on the ramp I could get my hand upt o change them,.... as you say, one by one. How do they fit in (not having received them yet to see myself) - are they a push/twist fit? I have a tow bar to fit so I guess i could do that at the same time.. I was delaying fitting the bar so that I could get the asist fixed first and not introduce another variable if I have trouble. If it does not reset itself, I will buy a DICE interface - sure there will be many other instances where I will need it for coding or other diags. Davi |

Various versions from original to clone... and some in between! Worth it really, given high dealer costs, and you can sell it later and not make much loss.... if you get out of a Volvo....and if you dont, you just save more money... And... I am sure I would develop a new, wider set of friends.... ;-)) David |

I hope this next but works and is helpful, I have tried to attach a link to the fitting instructions for the parking assist system. I know you are not fitting the full system but you can see how the bumper is removed and how the sensors are fitted which may be useful. http://vccs.volvocars.se/Accessories...1/XC90,%202004 The sensors themselves push fit, with clips that hold them which snap into place once the sensors are in far enough. You prise these clips back when you remove the sensors (you will instinctively know when you see then yourself). It’s a fairly straight forward process, took me about 3hrs but it would only take me half that if I were to do it again. Neil |

Hi Neil
The DICE interface is the Volvo dealer interface (or older VCT2000) used with VADIS which you will have seen on ebay.... It gives the full dealer level diags and coding functionality...this is not just OBD, but full dealer diags and config. There is a new toyota/honda/volvo combind interface that emulates a DICE, but I am currently establishing how close a relative to DICE it really is.... I am surprisedthat more folks on here do not posses one... but thats down to the "ownership profile" again (tounge in cheek guys!). David |

Thanks that now makes sense. I was aware of VADIS and knew it was replaced but never heard of DICE. Let me know how you get on. I think the profile is slowly changing as the cars get older with more hand on people getting involved. Not always good as these seem to be quite complicated cars. This section of the forum is certainly more "lively" than a year or so ago which I think reflects this. Neil |

I only buy 3-5 year old cars and would never (other than the many company cars over the years) buy a new car with my own cash, so the XC has only receintly been within a price range I was prepaired to pay! I do all my own maintenance, and have good knoweldge and experience of car electronics and engine management etc, but have zero experience on and Volvos other than the V40 - they seem to have eluded me over the years! Back to the profile - I was looking around for written up guides for thinsg like the cam belt/kit change and am giobsmacked that there seem to be very, very few.... perhaps its time to change that!?!?!? David |
Best gear, seems like we are in a similar situation here, my first volvo was a V40. Bought in 2003 when it was 5 years old. Currently on 163,000 miles and going strong. The XC90 (2004 D5 automatic with all the toys!) was bought to replace it, but we decided to keep the V40 too as my wife has taken to it!!!

Ok, next problem...
Diagnostics tell me that its sensor two that has failed, but fail to say which side is sensor 1. Anyone know?!?!? David |

I did end up with a DICE interface and VIDA - expensive way to find the duff reverse sensor but cheap in the long run given that I am very likley to need diagnostics going forward (and shut off these damn daytime running lights!). Given that the XC is a modern designed vehicle the extent of diagnostics and configuration is excellent - and among the best I have seen. VIDA is not the most friendly package I may add... but at least that gets you access to all sorts or parks and servicing info too. David |

What did you get and were from (assuming I could get one from the same place). Does it allow you to download information (like front parking sensors) etc. Or is just for diagnostics (which lets face it is what it would get used for most of the time). Too be honest I haven't really had much problems with mine but would still be interested in having the tools to diagnose and fix myself. It's a well built reliable car - engine slightly loader than some of the competition is all I can really complain about. Neil |
Hi Neil
I did consider a J2534 interface (as they are cheaper!), and they are supported by VIDA All-in-one since last year, but having done my research, it seems you can only use that interface for downloading software... and no diags! I bought a DICE interface - which so far, has worked great... full dealer level diags and configuration - I will check if I can enable the front parking sensors - I expect you can to be honest as its just enabling the device option, not adding a new device... that si where it seems to get tricky. Check your Pm... David |
Or you could try.....
I found this thread as I had the dreaded "Park Assist Service Required" message and dead sensors. I wasn't much looking forward to shelling out for someone to take the back bumper off and fix them, so I thought I'd try the fuse first. On my V70 this is located amongst the fuses in the left hand panel of the boot (No. 26 and it's a 5A one).
When I pulled it, it was fine so my heart sank. Nevertheless I gave it a rub, replaced it and then tried the ignition more in hope than expectation.... All was well! So it's got to be worth a try before assuming the worst! Cheers, TR |
