Interpreting Engine System Service Required

The following message has intermittently appeared on my dashboard "Engine System Service Required" and having paid a Volvo dealer £114 for a 'scan' I am still in the dark as to what is required. I had to insist that the dealer give me a copy of the scan report, although reluctant to do so, which said "possible throttle body fault and software". Not satisfied with "possible..." I have made further enquiries. As the engine light has not illuminated and performance is reduced intermittently, sometimes quite a lot, sometimes not noticeable at all and in all cases with or without dashboard message. Advice sought from technicians range from "check the pipe at the back" ?? to "Never known one of these to require a throttle body" I would appreciate members opinions

What car Adrian ??? I know this is the T5/R section but what Model/Age/Spec would be useful to help yer diagnose the Light/Message ect

Interpreting Engine System Service Required

Sorry Keith, new to the site thought car model would appear automatically. Its a V70 T5 late 2000

The Hooded Claw Jul 26th, 2011 20:51

Thanks fer the Info Adrian ... OK V70 ....the message is basically telling you something is "out of tolerance".. could be a number of things but it is MOST likely to be a MAF sensor problem.....

you say you've got "Reduced Performance" that to me points to Either less fuel or less air getting into the engine (I'm a BASIC old style "Home Mech"!!)

to follow my train of thought you have two options

1. A Dirty MAF Sensor

2. A dirty Fuel Filter

the Above in essence is what yer "Technicians" have told you "Throttle Body fault" .. so what goes into a Throttle body ... FUEL & AIR !!! .. which brings us right back to either a DIRTY MAF sensor or a DIRTY Fuel Filter ...

Check yer air Filter first off .. it MAY be Partially Blocked with CRUD (in fact take the Air Filter out altogether & take it fer a Blast about & see how it runs .if its STILL the same get the MAF cleaned .....if that don't work Clean the Fuel Filter ...

Mechanics these days ARE NOT "Mechanics" they are "PART REPLACERS" Change this & Change that ... Eventually they will "Replace" the part thats Faulty ... but "Faulty" is only a "Term" it may just need a clean ....

Interpreting Engine System Service Required

Thanks Keith, I'll give that a whirl tomorrow and see how she performs. Love this car, had it from 36000-132000 miles and don't want to loose it!

Engine System Service Required

Hi Keith Tried your suggestion of removing the air filter, gave it a brush and took a vacuum to the housing. Before replacing the filter went for a spin, covered about 6 miles and switched the engine off three times. The dashboard message remained on at all times. As this has proved to be an intermittant fault I am not confident that this cured the problem although it kinda seemed more responsive and certainly no vibration when opening up the throttle. Is cleaning or replacing the air sensor the next option? Torx screw drivers I have but not with a hollow centre to accommodate the 'dimple'. Thanks very much for your advice

Hi Adrian,
I had this message appear on my Volvo. The Volvo service centre dignosed my oil level was slightly over the full mark on the dipstic?
I did not have any issues with limp mode or anything like that.
All the best

Engine system service required dead end

It seems like I might have to scrap the T5!
Having been told by three separate service centres(2 main dealers and 1 independent) that it definitely needed a new throttle body I duly coughed up the £450 and had it changed. No dash board message any more but vibration start at 65mph. Took it to the independent specialist who diagnosed misshapen rear tyres which were changed. Still got the vibration at 75mph when driving alone. Vibration worse going up hill or with two people on board. Four adults and three rug rats on board and the vibration kicks in at 35mph. Volvo specialist now thinks it's a transmission problem as there is play in the drive shafts and differential. As the initial diagnosis from this 'specialist' was bad tyres Ive lost all confidence in his ability to get it right. My last Volvo, a 760GLE died of an auto box failure. Unless anyone has abetted idea?

Engine System Service Required

I too have had this message pop up along with 'Engine Service Required, SRS-Airbag Service required and Alarm Service required'
I'm not bothered abuot those other alerts as the beast (V70 D5 195,000miles) is really not worth spending any more money on.
The Engine System Service required has brought with it a much reduced power output. No more that 2000 revs and limited to 60mph, which ould be the equivalent of the milp home mode referenced earlier.

The multiple comments wrt oil level too high could be spot on. I serviced the car on Sunday (today is Wednesday) and have never had this issue before.
I will reduce the oil level to minimum to reset the issue then top up to half way as recommended and feedback to the thread whether this has fixed the issue or not.

You need to post in the correct section for the best response to your problem.

My 2002 T5 is also heading to the scapper in March BUT....

I don't have play in my drive shafts and diff, I have slop....That's what 239000miles does, BUT I have no vibration up to 80 mph - don't go faster.
I do get vibration as the front wheels wear though. Don't know if its a lose of a weight or just uneven wear, but I need at least one re balance per set.

BTW classic MAF fail is uneven idle, which becomes even when you disconnect the MAF. Dremmel/hacksaw a slot in the torqx screw..... simples

Cheers

Bob

Interpreting Engine System Service Required

Issue went away on its own without any input from me...phew!!

same issue

I have had the message for some time now. The first time I encountered it I had not changed the oil for ages and the car (a D5 engine diesel S60 2006 with 110k miles) lost power on the motorway. In that case the oil was low and so I topped it up. Then my friend changed the oil for me. Then after some months the message started to come back, at first intermittently, one day yes, another no, etc., it resembled the other message for the angle valve DSTC service required which did the same but that one depended more on humidity and weather. So for the past 3 months the message is now PERMANENT. While driving on M40 past Oxford I had a red message regarding coolant low and "stop safely"!!!. I panicked and stopped the car. I was on a level motorway when the message came on so I found this strange. Also the coolant was OK, it tasted sweet and within limits. When that happened I did check the oil, It was higher than maximum. I realize the engine was warm but still it seemed quite higher than maximum some mm. Regardless I bought a bog standard engine coolant and added a fair bit. Drove down to Brighton and back and the red message never came back although engine service required message is still on.

I will change the oil now and tell the man not to put it too high and let us see. Funny how some Volvo dealer told me "it is probably miscommunication between components" That was the Oxford Volvo claiming to have read the thing but not charging me and telling me to come back so they could read it properly (they never read it).

I only post all this because it seems to me that the message on the coolant is compatible with problems with the oil. Coolant and oil work together. I will post again if after the change of oil and lower level of oil the message should go away.

Same message but automatic gear box not right

This warning came on today and on the drive home the power through the automatic gearbox wasn't right it isn't shifting properly. It's an xc60 61 plate never had any problems before. My drivers side door did freeze this morning as well so all in all a bad day!
Could the cold effect this or is it just coincidence?

Fuel Filter

The message "Engine System Service Required" appeared for first time about two weeks after I changed my fuel filter last November. I have S60 D5 D5244T over 180 000 miles . I read very carefully all threads here related to this message, and noticed that the message was appearing on the screen immediately and every time after I was reaching 3000 rpm with losing power, no matter how many times I was switching off and on the engine.

So, I went to the garage yesterday and replaced the air and fuel filters (this time I purchased original Volvo filter kit). We switched on and off the engine few times after replacement to check what error codes I get. Two appeared and could not be cleared (see the pics below).

Anyway, after the replacement of air and fuel filters yesterday, my car is running OK again and the annoying message doesn`t appear anymore on the dashboard. I tried many times to accelerate and check the airflow, fuel injection and everything else which could come to my mind after all posts here related to that fault, and so far I do NOT have problems. The problem for my car was the fuel filter. I hope this can be from help to many people and save them a lot of money for trying to replace turbo, swirl arms, injectors, etc. For diagnostics, cleaning the MAF and replacement of air and fuel filters I was charged £30.00 in total.
