Rear Passenger Door wont open

Hi all, new member here.
the issue I am having is that the Rear Passenger door wont open from the outside of the car, I also cant open it from the inside as we have had child lock engaged on that door since we purchased it.

When I try to open from the outside I get nothing at all, it feels like the handle isn't pulling anything, when I open the other door the handle feels like it catches and you can hear it pull the door open if that make sense, but the broken side is just the handle moving and clicking catching on nothing.

anyone have any ideas on what to do?

This happened to our first XC60. It was under warrenty and the dealer fixed it but when I asked how they opened it they said they got someone to repeatedly press the central unlock on the drivers door as fast as they could make it work whilst someone else tried to repeatedly open the door from the inside.

If that doesn't work and a dealer can't open it from the edge of the door card then the door card will have to be broken to get it open and fix the problem.

Faulty door locks are a known problem on some V40’s; if you have not had the car too long and bought it from a dealer, you may get it replaced under warranty, or a goodwill contribution towards a new one.

hdav122 Jan 11th, 2019 17:31

Tried it

I tried to open using the drivers door unlock switch but had no luck. Someone pressed he unlock button serveral times and I tried to unlock it from inside by pulling handle and pushing door but got nowhere with it.

id5 Jan 12th, 2019 07:58

You didn't answer 60041's question on how long you have had it but I suggest that the next stop would be the Dealer if it is under warrenty, the garage you brought it from if second hand, a local garage to see if they have the knowledge and tools to open from the edge of the door card or from inside the window space. If none of them are suitable or work then it may be breaking the door card to get access to fix.

It couldn't be frozen perhaps? If water gets in it can behave exactly like that. A squirt of WD40 should sort it out.

hdav122 Jan 17th, 2019 09:50

It’s second hand. 64 plate. I have had it over a year now and Arnold Clark won’t tkucj it. What’s the best route to go down? Will it definetly be a broken lock or maybe something had come loose that I can clip back on?

Tony66 Feb 1st, 2019 12:05

Hi

I had the same problem with my 63 plate V40 early this year. The door lock had to be replaced which cost £270. This included a 30% goodwill contribution by Volvo after I complained to them. Apparently there was a 'deal' where Volvo were replacing these free due to known issues but that ended in September 2018.
Good luck!

Can you please tell me how to remove the two inaccessable screws on the rear edge of the door panel when the door is locked shut, what's the trick because I could not find a video on how to do that bit?

To open door take inner door card off and for me I swapped module unit which I bought from eBay for £18 and after that door opened as normal and window worked as normal. Everything back to normal and not the actual door lock faulty.

xc90 rear passenger doors won't lock or open

I have a 2017 xc90 and about a year after owning it, the rear passenger door (only one) locked and could not be opened from inside or outside. After locking the car and leaving it overnight it seemed to "reset" itself and worked. I would occasionally do this over the next year but no codes would be generated and the dealership could not repeat so they just left it. Now, 2 years later, it has gotten out of hand. Over the last month, the vehicle rear passenger doors (both now) won't open or worse won't close leaving me in the parking lot trying to figure out how to close them while I have my two kids in the back. Of course, when the doors won't open then I worry if we are in an accident the first responders won't be able to open the car and get my kids out. Anyone have any ideas???

Got almost the same issue on my 11 plate S60: rear passenger door couldn’t be unlocked with the fob, only from the inside, but a few weeks ago the car changed it’s mind and now the driver’s door will not unlock, rear door works fine ...
Had the car serviced at the dealership and asked them to check if there are any fault codes but nothing has been reported....
still trying to find out what is wrong with it ...

I have a 2015 Volvo V40 that I can't open the RH rear door. I have managed to get the door card off but now I need to remove the door module so I can get at the lock to release it.
I have removed all the screws from around it but it is attached in some way to the sliding widow. Obviously I can't force it. Does anyone know how it is attached so I can get it out?
I've looked for a Haynes manual but they only go up to 2004 so its no use.

Same issue.... so after a years trouble free ownership apart from a seat heating pad - within 18 hours of putting my car for sale on e-bay the O/S/R door now wont open from either the inside or out... I'm going to have a go at it tonight or tomorrow and will report back. Going to check on VIDA first but I doubt that will change needing to remove the door card and somehow unlock it with the door closed.

V40 Door locks.

Wife has a 2012 V40 T4, purchased June 18. So far we have had to replace 2 lock mechanisms, & last week a 3rd door refused to open. however this one has decided to correct itself for now. The 2 locks were done by a local specialist with no damage to door cards. Volvo have known about the problem since day 1 & extended the warranty to 4yrs. They were not interested in our case. We,ve been put off newer model volvo,s by this, its an expensive fix with potentially 5 locks to replace.

Rear Passenger Door Lock - A Known Problem

My XC90 rear driver side passenger door will not open. I've been told by the dealer that this is a known problem, and between Guildford and Leatherhead dealerships they have had hundreds of 'door lock' cases within the last couple of months.

As it's a "known problem", I was hoping that Volvo UK will cover the cost completely, but they have only offered 50%. This is because of the mileage apparently.

Very disappointed. We were recommended the XC90 by friends locally, 2 out of 3 of us have now experienced multiple problems.

This happened on my 2014 v40 cc D2. My door opened again about a week later on its own. I've taken the card off and sprayed tons of silicon grease at the lock. Touch wood it's been fine since. I found this brilliant walk through too https://www.flickr.com/photos/186289...57712503278052

Volvo XC40 Cross Country - rear nearside door locked

Had the same problem as many posters on here. I hadn't appreciated just how many were suffering what is a pretty serious design fault. Surprised Volvo continued to use these mechanisms year in year out knowing full well this is a safety issue.
I followed this link which proved very useful.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-TjMw6ORydA

The removal of the panels and the door card was relatively straightforward, except the torx 25 screw in the door which is very restricted by the middle post between the front and rear doors.
I used a torx tool with a 90 degree angle and aligned it vertical to vertical if that makes sense, as this seemed the only way to remove the tool.
However the screw is relatively flexible so you can get a straight torx in at a bit of an angle.
Disconnecting the speaker and windscreen wiper connectors is very easy - the blue one at the top and the grey at the bottom.
Disconnecting the door cable is more difficult and care is needed not to break the plastic clips.
The really difficult bit is poking around the hole to try and reset the door latch - took me almost 45 minutes to get it to trip open and even then I wasn't sure it had worked.

Once released though it is easy to reassemble everything with the door fully open. Applied loads of WD40 to the lock and through the hole at the latch.
