New Performance Exhaust - on a diesel..

Hi,

I couldn't find any threads discussing exhaust options so thought i would share my recent findings.

Kwik fit confirmed my exhaust was gone and needed replacing and kindly offered a replacment for £457 !

I have been wanting to get a stainless steel exhaust for my Jag for sometime but couldn't justify so decided to see if it was an option for the XC90...

It seems it is and i am booked next week to get a bespoke stainless steel exhaust built and fitted for £295.

I have never seen or can find a D5 XC90 with performance exhaust so will be interested to see what its going to sound like and look like. Just have to pick what type of pipes will look best!

Cheers
Ian

Hi Ian

Im also in the market for a system for my D5 S40.

Let us know how you get on because at that price you have found a bit of a bargain!

Ibge,
What exotic metal is the original system made of?
Could you explain why there is such a price difference please?

Ibge Nov 11th, 2010 13:01

Price difference is because Kwik fit have to quote for a genuine volvo part.

Volvo exhaust is made of normal cheap metal guaranteed for 1 year and like mine won't last.

Stainless steel one is made with high grade material and guaranteed for life.

I would like to buy plenty of extra parts for my volvo but the cost of parts so outrageous.
I would like to buy side steps (£400+), rear scuff plate (£150) , chrome strip on boot (£100) etc that are all just not worth the prices they charge.

Will post pics anyway and let you know how it goes
Ian

Wow that IS cheap. What is the name of the co?

Ibge Nov 11th, 2010 15:07

its www.mijperformance.com/

i have read only good reports of them and i couldn't find anyone come close to them on the price.

AB-UK Nov 11th, 2010 17:20

Ibje,

"Price difference is because Kwik fit have to quote for a genuine volvo part."

I thought that might be the case, but even so it seems a remarkably reasonable price for the stainless steel alternative - a "no-brainer" really.

Please update with your experience with it.

Beavis Nov 11th, 2010 21:15

wow, i'm more gobsmacked that the exhaust has gone already. my last 2 volvos were 13 years and 9 years respectively when i sold them after 3-4 years ownership, and from what i could tell, they were on the original exhaust.

MTE stainless exhaust for XC90.

I do keep the Swedish made Ferrita stainless cat back exhaust in stock here in the UK.

You can find it and order here: http://kalmar-union.com/parts/volvo-xc90-exhausts/

My Merc Cab needed a new exhaust and I had a bespoke stainless steel one fitted as Merc wanted £1078 !!!!!. I stressed that I didn't want anything noisy and picked the parts that the guy said were the quietest. Before I left I said "I'm not interested in performance or sound - I want the quietest". You guessed it, I got it back and it sounded like a bleedin' Saxo in McDonald car park !!!!!

Faced with listening to that or spending another £1K on a genuine Merc one, I took it as a sign to swap my car (to a 911 Cab for a year - then to an XC90 - hence being on this forum)

I'd still have that Merc if I'd have spent the £1K .....

Make sure you don't fall into the same trap.

Darren.

I thought the XC90 exhuast was stainless or at least mine seems to be.

don kalmar union Nov 12th, 2010 08:44

Ferrita exhaust.

These Swedish made exhausts are well designed and made by a company that has their own in-house rolling road. Being made principally for the Nordic markets they have to comply with very strict local regulations concerning noise.

Additionally I give a lifetime warranty on the fabric of the system as long as the original purchaser still owns the vehicle to which it was first fitted.

Regards, Don.

PS you can check Ferrita at their website www.ferrita.se

Darlo Nov 12th, 2010 08:49

Website sounds and looks impressive - do post some pics once the new exhaust is on your XC90...

No, quite the contrary....for that price you get a well made item every component of which has been designed and made to form a part of the whole, the final development having been carried out on Ferrita's in-house rolling road, these have been made in volume since the launch of the XC 90, they carry a valuable warranty and they simply cannot be compared with something made up on the spot from a limited stock of components kept on the shelf to make up something on the day.

Regards, Don.

I thought the std fit XC90 exhaust was already stainless?

Pics

Hi,
Thought i would post a couple of quick pics, they are not very good but give you an idea.
I will also try and post a video of the sound.

For those worried about sounding loud..don't. The sound is hardly any different with diesels, only change is a slightly deeper boom on start and low revs which sounds good.

MIJ were excellent and the price was the same as quoted with whichever tailpipes i chose which i thought was very good.

I picked the twin pipes as you can see but they had a nice big oval that good too.

As it was :

and another good way to annoy the neighbours is to bang 2 metal dustbin lids together ! (Marty Fieldman)

I would love these on our T6, but we have an LPG tank, so not an option.

Hi Don. I checked that exhaust kit on the Ferrita site... KR7495.00..!! which exchanges as £1,095...

If I buy the OEM Volvo tail-pipe, not only will I be able to retain the space-saver spare wheel and not have to cut a 2nd hole in the rear bumper, but I'll also be able to keep over £600 in my bank account...

Nuff said, methinks...

Hi,

I got the genuine Volvo sidesteps with rubbers treads delivered for about £340 all in from Stratstone Volvo in Nottingham last autumn. Very helpful guys, prompt delivery to Skipton, North Yorkshire. Very good. They did sell on ebay, but haven't checked recently.

My one and only purchase on ebay was a rear skidplate for my '05 XC90. £44 shipped. Makes the back of the car look much better (though not as good as the latest full width skidplates).

All I need now is the quad tailpipes in much the same style as you have done Ibge, and I'll be most happy.

Then want to get rid of the factory fitted 17" alloys for some decent looking rims.....

Thanks Ibge for the helpful posts.

What do they look like? (Forgot to spec sidesteps)

Hi,

Attached are a couple of images I just l just lifted from Google images. The side steps are the genuine Volvo aluminium ones, and to be honest the best of any I have seen on the XC90. I have the rubber treads fitted, a must given our wet and slippery weather!

Are they easy to fit? I also wish I had spec'd side steps as the kids struggle to get in. Don't fancy paying for a couple of hours labour if I can DIY easily. Nottingham is not too far from me, how much was the postage as I can collect and save some more.

Dead easy to fit. 8 bolts and they are done. The longer bolts for the running boards just replace some of the existing suspension bolts. Definately worth it to help the kids get in and out, also useful when cleaning the roof (and I'm 6ft5").
