Rear Lower Engine Mount

Hi,

Is there a way to test for the condition of the vacuum in the lower rear engine mount without having a vacuum tester?

I've got access to my mount while the steering rack and subframe are out but I don't want to spend another £90 on an engine mount unless I really need to. On the other hand, I'll never again have such easy access to it as I do now so if I need to replace it, now is the easiest time to do it. But how do I know if a new mount is required?
The top torque mount will need replacing (I have a new one ready to go in) and I read/heard somewhere that if that top mount has been worn out for a while, as mine has, it might have placed more stress on the lower rear one as the engine rocks backwards and forwards more than it should. Does that make sense?

Any ideas on vacuum testing without the right kit?

Thanks

Aidan

Listen for the popping noise in the oil filler. Pinch off thr hose to the mount. If the popping stops you can surmise the mount is leaking.

Thanks for that advice. But my problem is that the engine is hanging on a support beam, disconnected from all its mountings except the top one, so I don't want to start it up as I might damage something. It's tempting to just buy a new mount... the car has done over 120K miles...

Oh OK. In that case just buy a vacuum test kit. They are not expensive and you will use it more than once.
