122s Clutch/Gearbox problem

The young lad's car 122s m/od was leaking clutch fluid from the slave cylinder and it was very difficult to select 2nd and 3rd, often getting stuck in gear and only being able to be released after turning the engine off.

The slave and master have now been changed for new, with new rubber pipe and copper washer. I also adjusted the cable to ensure less pedal travel.

There still seems to be an intermittent (usually when colder) problem, again selecting those gears.

I am thinking of replacing the gearbox oil with Millers calssic EP80w90. Any views ?

Thanks in advance.

You mention adjusting the cable. With a hydraulic clutch system I don’t believe there is a cable. Slave cyl actuates the clutch directly.

Cant hurt to change the trans oil, especially if history is unknown and level hasn’t been checked. M/od? Is it an M41?

When changing ensure you can remove the filler plug before draining. If it’s an M41, you’ll need to fill and add more oil as it takes some time for the oil to flow over into the OD which shares the oil with the trans. Some suggest raising the front if the car while filling to assist the oil flowing into the OD.

Some discussion here on types of oil to use.

Sorry c1800, you are entirely correct. It was by changing the position of the clutch fork using the threaded rod at the end of the slave.

If brains were dynamite, I'd not have enough to blow my hat off...

You want more pedal travel not less to enable you to clear the clutch. Adjust at the pedal end to make the brake and clutch pedal pads level. That assumes that the brake pedal is set correctly. Pedal position settings are covered in the manual. Then set the clearance at the clutch lever end, just a small gap to enable the lever to move about 1/6" before the cable takes up the slack.

Thanks Derek. I will sort it this weekend.

I plumped for the Comma MVMTF Plus 75w90 in the end, as I could not get Red Line MTL, and this was the closest in spec. I will see how it gets on.

Thanks for your help and suggestions.
