Attachment 131733Is there anyone in the club that does valuations, I'd like a realistic valuation on my 1996/1997 automatic 940 2.3ti , its at just under 49000 miles with a full and detailed service history, I'm the second owner and have owned it for the last five years, it is completely rust free, during my ownership it has had,
new exhaust inc cat,
timing belt changed twice (one a coupe of month ago)
new skf tensioner,
new water pump,
new Bridgestone tyres within the last 2000 miles, now sitting on five draco's, the spare is yet unused.
leather heated seats fitted and re-coloured in two tone,
regular oil and filter and air filter changes (last done a couple of month ago,
the list goes on, I know I'll never get back what I've spent on this car,it is a very, very well maintained car,
recent installation of a LPG system with a 70ltr cylinder tank inspected and past at CRD in Bolton and is on the UKLP register,

Looks really nice.

Always thought the saloon was better suited to LPG. nice big tank between the rear wheel struts.

It's worth keeping David! You'll only be buying someone elses problems if you buy another car, you've sorted this ones little foibles and improved it, keep it and enjoy it!

I'll give you tupence threepenny and break it 😋

Car looks amazing, best body style too not this estate nonsense haha.

I imagine someone in the owners club is able to do valuations for insurance purposes so it would be worth contact the owners club.

Hi Dave, you more than anyone know the various little things I've done to this car to bring it to the standard it is, because you've helped me on many occasions, I've not 100% decided to sell, but if I got the right offer, I do have my eye on a couple of low mileage Merc's, David.

As i've already mentioned to you David, avoid those Mercs! They're already on the secondhand market for a reason, usually an expensive one!

I was in much the same quandary earlier this year with my S90 - does it stay or does it go? But does it make sense to sell? And if so, how much is it worth?

Well if it's any sort of indication, our 1998 S70 had to go off to the body shop last month after someone at the golf club where Mrs Jack swings a stick decided to put their Freelander in reverse without thinking to check for passing Volvos. Ouch!

The body shop have done a wonderful job, and the repair is invisible.

They also suggested that the car is worth between £4,000 and £5,000, and strongly recommended additional security and an agreed-value insurance.

Our S70 is in beautiful condition with a mere 220,000 miles on the clock, and when I spoke with an insurance broker they suggested that my 97 S90, with just 124,000 up could be worth at least as much, if not more. They also said that the bodyshop should be taken seriously because they are in the know.

Now it seems that 850s, and especially 850 T5 and R models are being offered for sale at incredible sums, and I'm not suggesting that a 900-series car has quite reached those dizzy heights, but it wasn't so long ago that you could get a nice clean 240 for perhaps £750. A good GLT will probably fetch eight to ten times that now.

It all comes down to finding that elusive buyer. The OP's 940 is gorgeous, and worth serious money to the right buyer. Equally it's worth about £60 for scrap to the wrong one!

As it's LPG'd it'll be economical to run, although for the purist the conversion detracts from the originality - which might, bizarrely, devalue the car.

Dave is right. with everything that's been invested in it the favourite option has to be to keep it and enjoy your investment. That's the conclusion I came to with my S90.

And Mercs are not all they're cracked up to be. I once owned a 1995 W124 E-Class saloon. Reputedly Stutgart's best ever model. Lovely car to look at, and superb to drive, but prone to niggling faults and (surprisingly) rust. It was 5 years old when I bought it, with just 50,000 miles up. But in the space of a further 55,000 miles it had engine troubles, gearbox troubles, rust peeping through the paintwork, wiper motor issues (that big single-blade sweep is impressive but complicated), and some of the air-operated accessories gave up the ghost. Oh and the speedo never really worked properly.

So what's the 940 worth? Well anything between £50 and £5000!

Jack
