Rear Main seal replacement. Anyone?

Does anybody know a place that will do a rear main seal for me.

Its a 940 Auto. I've tries over 20 places and they all say NO!

I live in Lincoln, but would travel a few miles to have it done.

My parents live near Wigan, Chorley etc. So could get it done up there.

I cannot believe how many garages say its "too big a job"!
What is going on with this industry. Its being ruined!

Give me a bloody ramp and ill do it myself.

they wont make enough money on it , the standard time for taking the gearbox in and out is 2 hours 12 mins + about half an hour to get the clutch and flywheel off and on and fit a new seal.

Make sure the crankcase breather Isnt blocked first!

Isn’t that the point of a garage though, to fix cars? They would be paid whatever the labour is accordingly plus any parts, VAT and fluids/consumables used. Why does making money have to come into it? Yes I understand they have overheads like any business, but the labour charges per hour and mark-up on any parts covers that. No one expects them to do it for nothing.

Unless you mean they can make more money doing other things like servicing and less involved repairs, which I get to an extent.

Garages want fast fit in and out jobs, they just want to be fitting filters, brakes , springs etc, stuff they can turn around. People also don’t want to pay labour. “How much just to fit X Y Z, my mate said he could do it cheaper……. Often without any concept of what is actually involved. So they turn anything which isn’t the day to day away.

You would think this would be a good job for someone, I work in a garage, tho we build special vehicles and run a fleet of them. I’m always up for a job like this than rarther than doing the usual servicing. You’d think someone would want to do it, it’s not much more than doing the clutch…..

I find it a little surprising that no one in over 20 garages has even quoted for the job, but I've also got old listening to managers and supervisors who 'just' want something done, it may be a small job which equates to a simple job in their head but that word 'just' rings alarm bells for me. Richiekuk 'just' wants the oil seal replaced, so you 'just' pull out the old one and pop in a new one, oh, you 'just' have to drop the gearbox off first, and that 'just' needs the propshaft disconnecting, and the job just gets bigger and bigger, on a 30 year old car where every bolt can shear or be seized and every obscure part you reveal can be worn out and near impossible to find a replacement which means there's a 940 blocking workshop space.

Having said that richie, have you tried somewhere that specialises in clutch and gearbox work? they would have the background and kit to do that part of the job and possibly be more willing to take it on.

I wouldt say it's a difficult job,it's just time consuming.

Having removed a gearbox with the car on axle stands outside in the middle of January it must be luxury indoors on a ramp

try bryn motors in wigan , ask to speak to alex

It is a time consuming job and the ATF cooler pipes often break taking them off as the seize onto the unions.

A job I am more than happy to do but there can be a fair bit of extra involved like the hoses already mentioned.
