'02 V70 auto 170,000 miles, intercooler gone

What it says up there, the intercooler has gone on my '02 V70 auto with 170,000 miles on the clock.

The gearbox is bit clonky, which makes me hesitate when big bills come in. Other than that, the car is very good.

I suspect that replacing the intercooler myself will be too time consuming (small child and home improvements use up most of that) and right at the edge of my technical expertise.

My local independent Volvo specialist are asking £490 all-in to install the correct Volvo part (he, incidentally, seems to have more faith in my auto box than many).

I could, however, buy an OEM one and get a local non-Volvo specialist to fit it, saving myself £200.

Are OEM intercoolers any cop?

What would you do?

Cheers All

I’d change the intercooler, it’s not technically hard to do, but a bit time consuming took me about 4 hours last year, juggling the work with the kids etc. I got a cheap I/C for about £80, an OEM one should last you another 100,000 plus miles.

I’d also be changing the gearbox oil at the same time.

Cool. Do you know where the OE number is on the intercooler?

Hi I did have a look but can not see it, the original one is made by valeo,
There are 2 different ones , as after 2002 the intercooler has the map sensor
fitted in the left hand outlet pipe, before 2003 the map sensor is fitted on top of the engine, just remove the big plastic engine cover and you will see it,
Dave

Well, dropped into the garage and it transpired the the air outlet hose had split.

Its been replaced and is still blowing smoke. I'm hoping its just unburnt fuel.

It's a D5, forgot that in the OP.
