2004 S60 2.0T cutting out issue - throttle body question

Evening all,

I've recently ended a c12 year ownership of Japanese cars to move to the more refined world of Volvo. After an ill-fated V70 purchase, I've recently picked a fairly tidy S60 2.0T.

It's off to a rough start with a cutting out/stalling issue. In summary:

- Started off fine, other than the occasional flatspot during WOT
- Idle started becoming a little erratic, but wouldn't stall until switched off. When restarting, engine fires for a couple of seconds before cutting out completely
- Scanned with Torque app, no live codes but pending P0101 (Mass of Volume Air Flow Circuit Range/Performance Problem) and sometimes a P2188 (System Too Rich at Idle bank1) to go with it
- If I clear codes, car starts again and the cycle repeats after about 15-20 miles

I was reluctant to start throwing parts at it (i.e. MAF as understand that's rarely the problem) so took the car in to a local specialist. They've suggested it may be the throttle body, apparently the internals (not the butterfly valve) can cause these symptoms.

Their suggestion is to let the problem develop but I can't really run a car that needs a DTC reset every other time I want to start it! I'm therefore going to try replacing the throttle body but have a couple of questions:

1) How hard is access? I can see it's at the back of the engine bay near the inlet manifold but haven't been able to get under it to assess access. I can't find any videos or images online for the 2.0T engine, only the 2.4/2.5 models.
2) Am I correct in saying that this year WON'T be fitted with the problematic ETM, and instead has a more conventional throttle body that can be replaced without coding? I'm looking at part number 8677867 / 30711554 for reference.

Hoping I'm not into the realm of dealer-only coded parts as these will quickly surpass the cost of the car.

Would be grateful of any guidance or other opinions if you think the issue is caused by something else.

A useful link that gets banded about these parts is https://volvodiagnostic.com/shop/ind...gory&id_lang=1 who are down in Tilbury a couple of hours from you

they do repairs of various parts including throttle bodies so you might not need a new one (if it turns out to be the cause of issues) at the very least it wouldn't hurt to ring them and ask questions

I'm sure others will be along to offer suggestions, good luck with it

Thanks for that, I wasn't aware they offered a throttle body fix. Coincidentally I discovered them only yesterday - the car had also thrown an "anti skid service" light with a code pointing towards the module. It's been reset for now but when it comes back and (hopefully) once the cutting out issue is sorted I'll be sending it their way for a £60 fix compared to ACTronics who wanted £129. Might be worth doing both at the same time.

How does it run if you disconnect the MAF sensor?

That's a key piece of information I omitted!

Fine initially then stalls the same as when it's plugged in. That was the main reason for not changing it out.

I've now also found a throttle body for less than the cost of a rebuild (and obviously less downtime too).

Hoping someone knows whether or not these need coding on an 04 car as will decide whether I replace or repair.

Replacement throttle bodies need calibrating with Vida.
I would therefore be using Vida on the existing throttle body to read out the current position data and run a calibration on the current one just in case it has gone slightly out of whack. It's not impossible that no replacement is necessary so always best to check to avoid wrong and sometimes expensive guesses.

Same with MAF data. You can graph everything you need to view its operation.

Dice and Vida will also be able to read all of the other modules on the car and the built in workshop manual and parts catalogue will guide you through doing your own repairs and potentially save a fortune.

I'd hoped the garage would have done that as they have VIDA, but the only feedback I got was that the MAF was reading "a little low" but not enough to cause the issues.

I can graph the same on Torque but obviously can't calibrate... Though I'm sure I read disconnecting the battery then letting idle would run a calibration of sorts.

I'm keeping an eye out for used DICE/VIDA on eBay, but even then understand functionality is still limited without access to a main dealer - unless of course I've got that wrong.

Going back to the throttle body, just to be clear mine is a Bosch unit. From diagrams I've seen online it holds no kind of chip so surely can't need coding... If that's the case could calibration not be achieved by the method above?

Final question, assuming I can't make good the current unit, my current body has part number 30711553. Dealer would supply 30711554, I assume these are interchangeable?

Thanks for the help so far, feel like I'm starting from scratch again with a new marque...

Don't get it off ebay just say 'can I buy vida please' and someone here will sort it for you ;)

It really is money well spent, I use it all the time just looking up part numbers and diagrams let alone the ability to connect to the car and see full fault details and all the info from every sensor

In that case... Anyone reading this post selling VIDA at a reasonable price... Please drop me a line! Looks like it's going to be a must-have for long-term Volvo ownership.

Still interested to know if the part numbers are interchangeable AND if coding is required or just calibration... Bonus if this can be done through VIDA.

Thanks!
