DTSC "completely off" mod - anybody using it here?
 

Was editing my signature today as I had extra spare 4 minutes of time :) and it kinda of hit me, that I haven't seen much info on this forum regarding the famous "de-nanny" mod. So far, one of coolest and cheapest mods I did.
Ever since I bought the car 1year ago I am active both on this an US forum, and one smart fella there figured out how to fit the switch to de-activate DTSC completely (I mean TRULY off all stability control except ABS). Have fitted this to my car 2 months ago and I tell you - that 1 day when snow fell, It was a perfect time to use it :} plus it does make car nicer to drive and you feel more in control.
Anyway - are you, dear forum members, aware of this cool mod? Or is it so old and "soo 2013" that everybody have it and not mentioning it? :}

I don't really see why anyone would:

- Want to (unless if was a track day car)

- Would be able to convince their insurers to continue cover after declaring that they have disabled a safety/anti-collision system?

?? Just my two penneth.

Ofcourse its personal preferences and I'm not trying to convince anybody to do so! - just asking. Also, its not like switching off airbags or disabling seatbelt warning light - its just a feature that allow you to disable (very invasive) stability control system _IF YOU WISH_ to to do.
I like to drive my car AND have fun with it, so If I feel like drifting on the snow I should be able to do so. DSTC system is very invasive and will prevent any attempt of skidding, deliberate or not. Also in some cases it MAY cause more problems than help, especially when it tries to "fix" your attempts of compensating oversteer etc so thats whyits good to have an option to disable it.
The way the mod is done is that DSTC is always ON, but if you decide to dissengage it it will switch it off until the next car startup. Its actually pretty cool feature and gives you the extra option of taking the muzzle off your car if you wish.
Anyway - not trying to start a debate or anything, just to ask if people here are aware of this possiblity as I for sure would be happy if I was told that earlier, thats all:)

sorry im struggling to understand this thread? by DSTC mod do you mean just simply turning it off on the stick? I do this all the time for drag races but for fwd cars there really isnt much else use for it being off as track days are better controlled with it on :thumbs_up:

Did you see the episode of 5th gear I think it was when they did swerve tests on car with DSTC on and then with DSTC off, at motorway speeds when they swerved (to simulate avoiding a car/accident etc) the one without DSTC on flipped the car!, that right there showed me why is a worthwhile feature ;-). As the other user said as cars after a certain age had to have it Mr Insurance will not be happy you can fully disable the feature on your car

On Volvo's if you disable DTSC you it turns off the "Spin Control" feature which is the process where the engine power is reduced if both front wheels spin. The theory is that spinning up then wheels helps on viscous surfaces like snow and sand.

You cannot turn off (without modification) the other 3-6 systems (depending on car) which try to stop understeer, oversteer, roll-over accidents etc.

Hmm, I feel misunderstood a little bit here :} and that actually gives me answer of why havent read about this mod on this forum.

let me emphasize - not trying to convince or condone doing this!, was just trying to inform you that option like this exist. I heard of people pulling the fuses out of the box to disable yaw sensor etc but it also affects ABS etc so its good to know there is better solution.

I would really not debate if DSTC is useful feature or not, I drive with it 99.9% times ON and I am sure on motorway and in normal traffic it is good feature!! But did any of you try to have some fun on snow/mud/rain with DSTC on? Like for example to drift on parking lot if AWD or even do some control skids on FWD? With DSTC its simply impossible - my system immediatelly shuts power off and brakes certain wheels to prevent skidding and actually counteracting my opposite lock. Thats not something I expect from T5AWD and not something I am happy to be restrained with.

look - I really didnt want to debate whether its sensible or not to do it, I can see its considered a bit of "no no" here so I wont go into details publicly, just wanted to share a bit of information that could have been useful for someone so please dont take it the wrong way :)

Yeh I turn mine off consistently in the below conditions

Snow Climbs
Give me better throttle control and grip when climbing, saves the car a bit as i expect to wheels spin a lot really.

1/4 Drag Races
Gives me better control off the line with out the interruption to reduce wheel-spin.

I dont think I have the guts to turn it off for track days yet as it has defenitly saved me couple times already so I highly doubt id ever turn it off on circuits :thumbs_up:

Soooo, how do you go about doing this 'mod' then?

My cursory google search ended up with XC90 forums not providing much of a conclusive insight...
