164 50th Anniversary
Are there any plans to mark the 50th Anniversary of the 164 launch in 1968 at the BKV this year? Be nice to get as many survivors as possible there
|
That would be nice, Brock, but somehow I doubt it. I tried at a Southern BKV a few years ago, and just 4 of us turned up: a few years before we got 5 (from memory) at Popham Airfield SBKV.
BKV attendance is a funny thing: there are far more P1800s around these days, a very fashionable car. However, there were more Volvo 140/164 series cars at the 2017 BKV than P1800s - and it wasn't a wet day so no excuse there. Agreed it should be publicised in the VOC magazine but from observation my conclusion is that very few classic Volvo Owners are genuinely as enthusiastic as say Mini owners. I'm not a Mini owner but friends are: they bubble with enthusiasm and ring around beforehand so as to arrive at events in convoy as if all part of one huge family. Whilst I know most VOC 140 and 164 show-ers, who are all as keen, that doesn't mean all owners are allowed to scupper any plans to the contrary their cars (!) or family may have. Perhaps that implies Mini owners are not family people? Brock - bearing your enquiry in mind, have you got your 164 running yet? Acc to my records it is the oldest UK survivor, beating one of my cars by just a few on my VIN chart. P |
It’ll be a shame if the occasion isn’t recognised, it’s back on the road again for the last couple of years, it’s ready to go once winter is over :)
|
Brock - see you have a 142S too. Dark blue? Was the previous owner Mark from the south coast, as I owned it before him and have pictures I took of it during restoration.

My 142S came from the Birmingham area, last taxed in 1983! I've been waiting for my friend to finish some welding for me so that I can get it painted & start putting it back together

164 Anniversary
HI You two
When I was register keeper way back in 1993 I had a 25th Anniv for the 164 and only had 9 turn up and there was a lot more 164s around then.I also spoke to Nigel Ayling to see if we could include something within the BKV and was told it was up to the current Reg Keeper to organise. Malcolm |
Hi Malc
When I get my wretched computer back from the menders (can't access my folders etc until then) will ask other 164 owners I know if they'd be able to reserve the BKV weekend so they can perhaps join us in theirs. Tall order I know but worth a shot perhaps (and I realise I'm not the current registrar also!). P |
Mad that significant model anniversaries are left to the register keepers to organise, especially as there are club links to Volvo UK, I'd have expected more interest in the brand heritage? I suppose even though these anniversaries are overlooked, at least i would have known what the menu was for the hog roast at the BKV by November last year ;)
|
If there is something planned for this year's southern BKV I would like to attend.
|
I guess the response to this thread is a guide to the level of interest in marking the anniversary then.
|
As friffies said, the procedure probably has to originate with the current 164 register keeper. When proof-reading my section (140s) I noted it hadn't been included in his 164 piece for the forthcoming magazine, so mailed him accordingly.
There is nothing else I can do, but when my own computer-menders retrieve the wiped records from my hard-drive will mail all owners I have ever dealt with. At least I can still send/receive at my library...... Paul |
Best to get together at this year's BKV (s) then...
|
When and where? and I will try and come along with 164

Join the owners club and you'll get all of the information in advance. You'll also be able to line up with other members rather than in the visitors parking.
27th June Hatton Country World Warwickshire. More details on the forum calendar. |
I was a member for a quite a while after purchasing the 164, but found the 140/164 so poorly supported I let my membership lapse, I was kind of hoping this had changed.
|
Yes, but there are so few surviving 164s (about 2 dozen) in the UK the activity with them is bound to be minimal. However, from my records over 50% of them ARE owned by VOC members.
What I find more surprising is that there are nearly 10 times as many 140s surviving in one state or another (acc. to DVLA records) yet very few members. So my question - where do they get their parts if not through the VOC? Or are most of them just forgotten barn-lurkers lying dormant on the official records? P |
A lot of the stuff seems to be changing hands through Facebook groups, some Volvo specific, some general classic car group
|
It'd be nice to get mine ready for the BKV. Unrealistic though, I think. Maybe something later in the year...?
cheers James |
Not long now, wonder how many survivors we will get?!
|
'fraid you won't get many if any from the south of England. I won't (another bit of eye surgery) so no driving for a bit again, Rod won't - too costly and far from Southampton on a pension, Alan from Eastleigh never goes anywhere in his, I think Mark's is currently stored, Glyn at GB Autos had his so blocked-in in the shipping container when I visited during the week.... and the white one in Surbiton is a new sighting to me so probably doesn't know of us.
Ray from Barrow will though, as probably will Malcolm from Norwich and Wesley from Essex, so thats the top-three positions already judged! P |
With mine that’ll make 4!
|
Just what we needed
My 164 will be there at Hatton she will be 47 years old on 1st July
|
Mines in its 49th year, registered early March 1969
|
I take it the event takes place on the Saturday? If so I'd like to go.

I dont think my brother wil be able to take his 164 this year
|
Just a thought, as a non member, will I still be allowed to park in the model line ups? I know I can’t be judged as part of the BKV, but hopefully would still be put with the other 140/164’s?
|
You can join on the day.
|
You mean rejoin after letting my membership expire after several years :)
|
Nice to meet you the other day, Brock!
Mine is still 'under resto', but I'm hoping will be on the road within the next 12 months. It is starting to get there - I think we're now past the halfway mark! cheers James |
Good to meet you too, hope the project makes progress & you can be there for the 60th Anniversary :)
