Heifer, my '97 940 Torslanda Estate

Hello,

I have recently (yesterday) acquired a 940 estate in nautic blue. It has currently got 530,000 miles on the clock. One owner from new with a pile of service history. Still going strong.

It has, as you may expect, a couple of issues one issue is on starting, whether hot or cold, you need to blip the throttle otherwise the car will stall after a second or so. I am going to clean the throttle body and the IAC valve first, need a gasket for the throttle body first. I also intend to retube everything in the bay.

Does anyone have the specs for the vacuum hose needed for a complete change? I also want to do the coolant hoses while I am at it, can I buy them in a kit or do I need too buy them individually? I have considered silicone hoses for vacuum and coolant, not sure if that is a worthwhile investment however.

I also want to change all the belts. What v belt sizes do I need? The timing belt was done two years ago but is coming up too its 50k mile service time so I will do that at the same time.

I also have a few small oil leaks to get into but I need to clean the engine up to be able to locate them easily. I will be doing a full service at some point this week hopefully and while I am doing that I will get in amongst it a bit more.

The column bearing is very creaky and has failed, there was rust dust on the cover under the dash when I dropped it down, I have cleaned it with compressed air and sprayed it with silicon grease for now which has sorted it but ideally it wants changed, how much of a job is this?

Apart from the above, mechanically it is in really quite good health.

Aesthetically, it needs a new front O/S wing as it has a major hole in it. Desperately needs a new windscreen as this one is cracked and chipped in multiple places. While the screen is out the rust around it needs tarting up. The rear O/S arch needs a bit of love, the front edge of the bonnet is the same. The boot has paint flaking near the washer jet. Finally it all needs a really good detailing.

The interior is more or less perfect bar the drivers seat has a hole in it and the foam is a bit saggy.

Any help with any of the above is appreciated.

There are of course other niggles but I will save you the pain of reading through them and I will intend to keep this thread updated as a diary of pain/joy. On to the next half a million miles.

Cheers,
Noddy

A true high-mileage car: half-a-million miles and counting.

V-belts are different depending upon whether or not the car has A/C, and the 11AV1013 belt ones appears to have been replaced by a 6375MC which is wider. (The 11AV1013 is also used by some 2.8litre Granada models built between 6/81 and 8/85).

The steering column bearing is a PITN; especially on an airbag-equipped car. I did one on a non-airbag car several years ago; give yourself a complete day forit although it probably won't take that much time.

There are articles on the Stage 0/Stage 1 servicing in the 700/900 Articles section that will guide you through many of the jobs. I have a crankhaft locking tool that I lend out for the cost of postage and a small donation to charity

Loki, thank you.

The car does have A/C, it even works. Does that mean I need two

I did look at the job amd decide it was going too be a pig, I may just pack it with grease as best I can and ignore it for now, I am not getting any of the usual "clunks" associated with it so it will do for now.

That may well be useful. I will order the belts up and get back to you on that when they arrive.

Cheers

Great mileage!

As your car has AC I think it only has one water pump belt, one power steering belt and one alternator belt.

You'll get a wing on here. Just keep looking at cars being broken or post a wanted add.

Welcome to Volvo ownership!

Vac hoses I'm sure I replaced some with 4mm internal diameter hose. Others will confirm.

Welcome aboard Noddy! Have a word with Luke (360beast) about the spares you need :

Cleaning out your PCV system will pay dividends and should (hopefully) reduce a lot of your oil leaks. I always add 0.5-1.0L of synthetic ATF (Carlube ATF-U is my favourite) to the sump after draining the old oil then top up with good quality 10W40 semi-synth, new filter every time.
This helps to gently clean the internals of the engine, revive the various oil seals, frees sticky piston rings and valves (helping restore compression) and generally keep things moving nicely.

Welcome :)

Saw this one for sale and was impressed with the condition considering the mileage! I hope you were able to negotiate with the seller on price though!

Follow the advice above regarding the PCV system for the oil leaks :)

Cheers,

I did do a decent job on the price actually. Still slightly high (£1500) but it is in remarkably good nick and has been very well looked after. Drives very well. Adjusted the handbrake and the throttle this morning so they are both working a bit more positively.

I have checked and I think my PCV is blocked up, thats next on the list. Worth buying new or just cleaning up?

The clutch is on the deck. Bites unless your foot is on the floor. There's no adjustment with it being hydraulic I believe, does anyone know any fixes for this?

Volvoalways, I have received your PM thank you, can't reply just yet as I haven't got 30 posts. I am potentially interested in the grey half leather but we can discuss this further when the time comes.

Cheers

If you are doing cambelt just replace the three front oils seals. That will cure your oil leaks  Clean PCV to stop it happening again

Most of the small vac hoses are 4.5mm internal diameter. I replaced all mine last week along with the brake booster hose
