940 starting issue doing my head in
Hi
I have a customers 940 LPT doing my head in, it starts then immediately cuts out unless you rev it as you turn the key and keep it above 1000rpm for the first few seconds. Car had 78000 miles from new and has had new plugs, dizzy cap, rotor arm and all leads yet problem is still here. Fuel pump relay has been swapped with a known good one. Anyone have any ideas? |

Either way it's probably condensation in the fuel tank, add a bit of meths to the tank, if it's got 1/4 tank of petrol, add 2L of meths, if it's got 1/2 tank fo petrol add 4l of meths. https://www.toolstation.com/methylated-spirit/p99550 Cheapet way of buying it, don't skimp on the amount, it won't work if you don't put enough in. |
LPT should be without cold start valve.
Still would be better to post year of the car too..... TPS I would check now. Does the car is with the diagnostic box in the engine bay or the later version with the OBD plug inside the armrest? If this version it could be the anti theft system too. Can't be more precise without year of production Good luck, Kay P.S. with or without EGR? |
if it starts, it must have fuel and the fuel pump(s) must be operational. If it runs, ditto.
If it starts, the ignition system must be operational. If it runs at 1000rpm or higher, ditto. If it will not idle, the idle system including TPS is a good start point... A voltmeter and a sheet of paper to write numbers on is a good idea at this point. |
Its a 1998 celebration, one of the last ones off the line.

OK, no EGR and the newer version on diagnostic.
Engine light isn't on? Measure the TPS, only the idle switch, and have a closer look about carbon which will fool the throttle and the throttle can't close. Check with a mirror or remove the throttle body stuff. Good luck, Kay |
Give the meths a try Tom, add it to the tank, take it for a run and see what it does the next morning.
