How safe are the rearmost seats for children?

Just out of interest, does anyone use seat 6/7 routinely with 3 kids or more? I am just wondering about the safety of these seats where a rear impact is involved, we are considering an XC90 in the future and we would need to use the rearmost seats for most journeys, probably our 3 year old would go there in here child seat. It occurred to me that Volvo probably thought of that when they designed the car, most other vehicles I understand will experience a lot of intrusion into the boot in a rear vehicle impact?

Thank you.

You won't get any safer than a Volvo.

The only way to further reduce the risk of injury during a crash is simply not to drive.

They have curtain airbags back there and a safety cell.

If you youtube it you will see the crash test 3d modellin.

Best of the 7 seaters of that vintage I should imagine.

No one has ever died in the UK in a XC90:

My two girls both use the 3rd row seats leaving room for my other daughter & my son in the back & me & the missus up front- I have no doubt whatsoever that this is the safest 7 seater I can buy, I’ve had zafiras/c4/shoguns, & this is far superior in every way.
IMO you won’t get any better if you need that 3rd row, plus they are practical, Other 7 seaters can’t match it.

There are 6 of us so we use the third row all the time, I wouldn’t put the 3 year old back there though as its not easy to get back there to put the belt in. For us it’s the 8 year old (in his booster seat) and 12 year old where as the 15 and 3 year old (extended rear facing) in the middle row.
This means that if we are less than 6 the 8 year old can go in the middle seat using the built in booster.
I have no worries about them back there, statistically rear end shunts are slow and rarer than you would think.

I have had a full speed head on crash, and apart from dented panels there was no intrusion into the shape of the vehicle (the other vehicle was completely destroyed forward of the passenger compartment.

Last week I saw photos on Facebook where a BMW 3 series had run into the back of an XC90. The XC90 suffered a cracked and split bumper, the BMW was mangled up at the front.

Its probably the safest vehicle you could transport your kids in, and though I dont have cause too I wouldnt hesitate to put my children in those seats.
