S40 1.6 Diesel - Amber engine light

Hi,

A few days ago my 60Reg S40 displayed a "Reduced engine performance" message and the amber engine light came on while driving to work. On the way back, there was no such display and message/light remained off while driving since until this morning when the amber engine light came on again. I have made it home, but drove max 45mph (average speed about 30mph) and does not appear to shut down/idle. There are no odd noises coming from under the bonnet, so I am wondering what is causing this and whether the car is safe to drive before I get it to a garage. Any advice would be welcome.

This can be caused by quite a lot of things, so best thing for you to do is have the error codes read out, either by a garage or someone with a Vida/Dice setup.

Intermittent amber warnings are not as bad as red warnings, but obviously, you shouldn't be driving the car for months or years before investigating the cause as it might be something that isn't too expensive to sort if it's done in time.

Change the fuel filter first with that engine. That , in my experience, can cause all manor of grief.
