1.5 T2 Auto - 98 RON?
Has anyone determiend whether 98 RON is worth the extra cost in terms of fuel economy for the 1.5L T2
The manual just says "95 RON can be used for normal driving. 98 RON is recommended for optimum performance and minimum fuel consumption." but that seems to be a generic statement for all their petrol engines. |
I have a V40 T2 automatic and in the two years I have owned the car I have run it on Shell or Esso 95 RON apart from once when I used 98 RON but can't say there was any noticeable difference. The car has always averaged around 40 mpg but I have averaged high 40's on a longer cross country run.

Well my 65 plate V40 R design geartronic T3 is 3 years old in January next year. For the last year Ive only put in super unleaded. It goes much better and economy is slightly better. My car only comes out at weekends so is driven on longer trips not around town. I get between 400 and 500 miles from a tank.
Ive noticed that as engine has loosened up it is much better. Currentl done 11700 miles. So answer is yes. Super unleaded is worth it in my view. |
Unless the car is mapped to suit the higher octane fuel, little if any difference will be made.

Not sure about the newer engines but all of the turbo petrol volvo's I've owned respond much better to quality fuel.
I notice a difference between regular Tesco unleaded and regular Shell unleaded, and a bigger difference still with 99RON, although again Shell seems to be the best. |
My Alfa 159 has the advanced 1750 Turbo which is also used in the Alfa 4C. It runs on 95 Octane as recommended. The engine is not designed for 98 Octane and would be worse. The Octane rating is about preventing early detonation in high compression ratio engines. You need the higher Octane to cope.
If an engine is designed around 98 Octane then the use of 95 Octane results in poorer performance as the knock sensors retard the timing to prevent detonation. It's probable that the V40 falls into this camp. The quality of the fuel may also be aligned with the Octane rating but there is no reason for this. The same additives could be put in the lower octane fuel. So with or without additives if the engine is tuned for 98 Octane then you will get better fuel economy and performance by using it. |
Hello,
Mine is a T3 r design auto. I tried both and I can't tell the difference except the extra cost for the 98. I use only 95 with an average 46/47 mpg. I did 25000 miles at the moment. Hope that helps |
