etm replacement with pics anyone?
 

Hi all, Just wondering if anyone knew of a step-by-step ETM replacement guide with pics, would sure help us who haven't got the cash to do it at a garage (i understand it would need to be programmed afterward..)

Turbo or non-turbo as this makes a big difference to how you do the job - Mike

well its a non- turbo, 2.4 built in 2000, petrol. Ive asked for a quote here in norway and they want 800 quid :-(

The non Turbo is quite an easy job to remove replace, just taken these pictures of my V70 which should be the same engine as you have ( 20 Valve non-turbo built in 2000:

Start by removing the air inlet pipe, I just took it off at the ETM and moved it out of the way

Once the hose is out of the way you will see the four bolt heads that retain the ETM to the inlet manifold, in this picture due to the hose still being attached you can see the two 10MM head bolts, the other two are on the other side of the inlet pipe.

Note where the electrical cable goes in to the ETM this is NOT a connector, the ETM is supplied with a flying lead and plug as part of the ETM assembly.

Leave a couple of the bolts in to support the weight of the ETM while you sort out disconnecting the electrical plug which is on the forward cross member behind the radiator just in front of the starter motor, one part is fixed to the structure of the car, the other free plug is on the flying lead that goes to the ETM.

Note the wiring to the ETM is routed between the starter and the engine block, the plug is too large to fit through the gap so you can either remove the starter motor or (as did) cut all six wires about 150MM from the plug then solder them back together afterwards. The cores are colour coded so its no big deal! - If you cut the wires and join them after you can route the cable in front of the starter motor making the job easier should you ever have to do it again. Takes about 20 Minutes to remove if cutting cables, probably more like 2 hours if you opt to remove the starter as well.

If you take the starter out make sure you disconnect the battery first, once the cable is free remove the last two bolts to release the ETM from the engine, reassembly is reverse of the above but don't bother routing the cable between the engine block and starter motor, just clip it up using Tyraps to prevent it going any where near the cooling fan! - Mike

Hi, its very simple job but you need to have a new gasket to replace the old one when you fix the new ETM. You need to disconnect the flex hose from the air filter and undo the 4 bolts that hold the ETM in place. Follow the leads to the plug and disconnect it. There is no need to cut the cables as if you play little bit with the plug and move it to the left you will be able to free it up. The re-progamming is a costly bit as you would need to go to Volvo main dealer and pay around £200+ I was told to get it re-programmed to work with your ECU. There is no garantee the replacement ETM will not fault as again. I have found a Canadian company that have patented a replacement for the faulty part in the existing ETM and are supplying a reconditioned ETM's with pre-loaded software for your car( you send them your VIN number) included in the price. My next question is, can i buy refurbished parts from the UK? or would i have to go through volvo. Here in norway everything is expensive so i prefer to shop abroad.
petrov05, is it cheaper to go through canada to get a reconditioned part?, i looked at the site but they want 699 dollars, isnt that quite high?

I took mine off and sent it to bba remanufacturing based in Rochester UK, they offer a quick turn around for the cost of around £330 including postage within the UK (overseas might be a little more costly) - Not had an issue with it since re-fitting it to the car about 14 months ago, try This page for a start point on their web site - Mike

You may have sorted this by now Steve but, if not, you should find that an Indipendant Volvo Specialist can supply a new ETM from Volvo for £136, plus new software for £14, plus fitting. I believe this to be a nationwide agreed price from Volvo following the years of issues.

I paid £202 to my excellent indi a few months ago and haven't looked back since.
