leak at top of windscreen
 

Morning all,

Not long purchased a 2012 V70.

It rained quite heavy over the weekend, for the first time since I bought the car.

The following morning the A pillar trim was wet on the passenger side.

I can't see anywhere obvious, although strangely the windscreen side trim does not go all the way to the top of the windscreen and there is a gap at the top both sides.

Is this for some kind of drainage - I have looked this morning and there was a fair bit of gunge accumulated in that gap on the leaky side - could this be the reason, like the drainage tube was blocked, so the water is getting in to the screen rather than down the drainage slot?

I wanted to make sure it was nothing simple before I thought about getting the whole windscreen replaced (which I assume the Insurance complaint will not replace unless it is 'broken'!!).

Windscreens leaking is well known problem on P3 V70s , see sticky thread. You can sometimes see the screen moving by pushing it from inside the car , this will confirm that the bonding has failed . If you have a sunroof fitted the drainage holes can become blocked causing water to run down the A pillars an into the footwells.

thanks ModelFlyer - no sunroof in my model, but the windscreen does move when you push it from outside, so sounds like the bond has failed.

Yes I am a model flyer ,never been to Weston park but might possibly go this year. V70 was a great car to models but have now moved on to a Jaguar Sportbrake. Good luck with V70

Got it booked in for a windscreen tomorrow.
Taped up the offending corner, covered it over during the night, drove to work in light rain this morning, 9 miles, and it was still starting to leak water onto the edge of the a pillar trim adjacent to the windscreen.
Could it be anything else?
I do not have a sunroof.
Volvo reckon 99% that its the windscreen but hows the water getting past the duct tape?
Or could it be something to do with the roof bars?

The water could get in at one place, follow the parts in the roof and then leak in elsewhere.
You could also have a small water reservoir in the roof by now, slowly emerging inside the car as you move around.

Ok..had the winscreen replaced on saturday. Drove home in pouring rain and a pillar trim was dry so hopefully problem sorted.
There was no sealer at the top of the windscreen whatsoever. Original screen, only bonded at the bottom and down each side. Fitter was very surprised and showed me the windscreen. Looks like it was missed at the factory & only the rubber trim was holding out the water..well, almost!
One question though..there is now a gap at the bottom of the windscreen between the lower trim (which the wipers go through) and the edge trim that goes down each side of the windscreen. This may well have been there before but didn't notice. That said, the lower trim btightp tight at tge other edge so there would have to be a gap at one edge as the trim is 5mm too short.
Is this normal? It looks like any water going through this gap will fall into the inner wing, where i assume any water will also end up that passes betweeb the wing and the a pillar.
Maybe i am being paranoid now but just wanted to make sure all is in order.

Mine leaks too. Did you choose to renew windscreen or did it break during removal? Some people have successfully has it removed & rebonded, but the fitters tend to warn there is a risk of damage so advise to factor in cost of new glass. Were you able to do it on windscreen insurance ("yes, there's a big chip in it" ;) ) or did you just pay for a new one, & if so, how much was it please?

At least in Sweden, provided it can be shown that it's the original screen that's leaking, Volvo Cars pay for the replacement. This is due to this in that case being due to a fault in manufacturing, and since the windscreen is a safety related component, it's not supposed to fall off the car.

That's interesting. I seem to recall reading on the 'sticky' thread that Volvo UK were not interested as it was out of warranty & they had advised it was not a manufacturing fault. Still, it's worth me sending them an email to check. Have you got any links to pages that covers the policy in Sweden please?
