2008 v70 rear brake pad replacement
 
Hi all. Considering replacing rear pads at home. Anyone found any difficulties with this as I hav`nt done it on a vehicle with electronic handbrake before??:car:

The motors have to be retracted by connecting to the volvo workshop computer , only then can the pistons be squeezed back in .. Then the motors have to be re set and an installation check done .

You can get tools to do this for you. Try googling Volvo EPB tool. There is a few on the market now. I've never used one though although I will soon!

My rear pads are getting thin (less than 3mm of friction material left). The dealer wants over £140 to change them but I've seen the pads for less than £30 delivered. I've replaced pads on many cars before and consider myself to be a competent DIY mechanic (having prepared and serviced successful rally cars back in the day!) I understand that you need to use a special tool to retract/reset the electronic parking brake. I've seen a number on the market but the cheapest seems to be the Autel EST201 at around £70. Has anyone used this on the Volvo? Various suppliers of the bit of kit say that the latest software release (V1.08) allows it to be used on Volvos but the Autel website only seems to have V1.03 and only lists it as compatible with Merc and VAG.
I was also wondering if anyone has succesfully managed to use a PC with an OBDII interface to retract/reset the EPB, if so what software is required.
Another option seems to be to buy an EPB reset tool and share it via the forum. I imagine that each of us will only use it (on a DIY basis) once every couple of years or even only once in the ownership of a car so buying one outright seems a waste (although if the machine is £70 and the pads £30 thats still a £40 saving over the dealer price). Is anyone interested in co-ownership?

rear pads on these cars with electric parking brakes are wearing faster than the fronts , between 18000 miles and 30000 seems to be an average life at the moment so you may be changing them more often that planned !

Hi Clan,
I must be driving very carefully then. I'm just over 51,000 miles and the thinnest of the original rears is down to just under to 3mm, the fronts still have about 6mm left.
At the last service (37,500, but done at about 38,500) I was advised that they probably wouldn't last to the next service (due now). I decided to keep them and monitor them closely. I measured them straight after the service and the thinnest was just under 4mm (of friction material) so I've used 1mm in 12,500 miles.

Anyone know how much they come with new? I can find spec sheets showing the overall thickness including the backing but I didn't think to measure the thickness of the metal!

generaly if you drive harder the rears last longer as the pressure is limited to them more often . light treatment wears them faster as they get used more . all to do with EBD ...
a new pad is about 10mm thick , 2 mm an absolule minimum so about 8mm of useful pad available . I cant see yours lasting 100000 miles somehow ... .

Have you ever noticed how much cleaner the rear discs are on the new generation cars with the electric parking brake and how much brake dust is on the rear wheels , compared to a 240 940 S40 850 ?

I bought one of the EST201 units and upgraded it to allow for the Volvo EPB deactivation but haven't used it yet. PM me your email address and I can send you the screens of what it displays etc.

I have made it to 107,000kms on the original F & R pads but the rears need doing very soon...

I was going to buy a Sealey tool:

If you are planning on keeping the car a long time, it may be worth it?

They can be found for around £150.

If you do go ahead and do this yourself, please write-up the process to help others???
