S40 engine system service
Ive just got a 2008 s40 d5 to do me as a bit of a run about.
Its got 165k on it and seems to have been reasonably well looked after. Im really liking the car but a message displays on the dash everytime its started saying 'engine system service required'. Is there a common 'ish' reason as to what this means?. I will get the car booked in somewhere next week if needs be but just wondering if its usually anytime simple as im reasonably handy with the mechanical end but not with anything electrical or technical/diagnostics. Cheers fellas. |
Check the oil level on the dipstick; any more full than 2/3rds up the stick will give that indication. There should be a sticker in the engine bay warning of that. If it is 'overfilled', after adjusting the level the message should disappear after 2 or 3 engine heat cycles.

Thanks @phil1968
I think the oil was slightly high and i changed the oil and filter tonight. I put in 6ltrs and its showing half way up the dipstick so hopefully i the message will clear its self if that was the problem |
If it continues to show the message, along with briefly going into limp mode if you give it some beans in 3rd gear, it may also indicate that your diesel filter could be due to be replaced. Had this on mine, albeit a 2.0d engine.
Bit of a pain for DIY replacement, as my engine doesn't self bleed so any air in the fuel line will result in the vehicle not starting until the diesel line has been bled through. |
