Follow up on 940 clutch squeel

Lost the last thread about clutch squeel /groan but there is a similar thread running on the 850/V70 forum about the noise and reasons behind it. One problem I had recently is worth noting. I changed clutch with surgical precision!!! Everything was AOK on day one and then the most terrible snatch occurred and continued. Checking we found that the lever between clutch cylinder and thrust race was vibrating like a good un. Even a friend in the trade did not diagnose so out came the clutch again. No visable signs of wear, damage etc on any part. Mystified we had the components under strong light etc to examine. Looking at the thrust race we noticed that the race itself is separate from the plastic holder. It can move from side to side. A call to SACHS revealed that the new races are ''self centering'' i.e. any slight misalignment should be rectified by the movement of the race on the plastic holder. This thrust bearing had gone off centre very slightly causing the problems. Made sure everything was aligned including the centering of the thrust bearing on its plastic holder, reassembled and crossed fingers problems have ceased. The only thing that may have caused it was as we struggled to put the box in the first time the actuating lever must have been knocked uncentering the bearing which instead on realigning itself just got worse. Cheers Nigel
