V40 eml/egr fault.......

Just bought the bloody car last Saturday and done 150 miles in it. 2015 v40 d4 with 58000 on the clock and fvsh. Tonight the eml comes on and the cars running like a bag of carp. Wouldn’t tick over or drive at all. AA mans come out and code read it, and it’s come up with a air mass too high fault code and an egr general fault. He unplugged the air mass meter and no change, so plugged back in. Then blanked the egr off and it runs fine apart from the eml.

So, I took out an AA warrantee when I bought it, but it has a 14 day exclusion period so doesn’t cover for the first 14 days! So I know that I can’t use that to get it sorted.......... where do I stand with the used car dealer (not volvo) in terms of a warrantee and/or the law?

Finally I’m luckily in a position that if needed I can find the money to get volvo to do the work but what are your views or suggestions?

Haha told you welcome to the EML light club,

Dealer will fix, major know problem,

be either,

egr cooler blocked, (does it have a T piece in top rad hose)
egr valve itself jammed up due to soot leakage (sounds like this to me)
02 sensor clogged up,
inlet manifold flaps jammed
or insufficient compression due to knackered piston rings

the garage you bought the car from is responsible for this , drop it back on his doorstep and advise them to give it to a volvo dealer as it might be to their advantage . It is the EGR Valve stuck open it will need a new one ...

I’m assuming from this reply that you think it needs the recall work on the egr done? I will take it back to the garage on Monday but would like an idea of what’s what.

Yes , if the engine doesn't run properly it will be the EGR Valve stuck open . If it is the cooler the light comes on , sometimes with no driving disturbance .

Whether the dealer sold it with a warranty or not, you should be covered by the consumer rights act - especially after only a week. That is why it is best to always buy a used car from a dealership. TBH, based on experience, I prefer to buy direct from a main dealer. You get a different quality of car and, using Volvo Selekt as an example, a very good warranty if something does go wrong.

Quick update, going into volvo on weds and confirmed under warrantee till middle of next year! Turns out I have Volvo Assist too, Aswell as AA cover! Lol
Either way, the volvo dealership were great in assisting me so will see what happens, but all looks good so far.

Just looked at the age again LOL. It is indeed still inside manufacturers warranty!

Confirmed stuck egr that needs replacing, so will indeed be done under warrantee. Going in on Monday and being given a courtesy car for the day. Will get it serviced at the same time to save me some time before Xmas. Lovely.
