v40 door lock problems.

My wife has a 12 plate V40 T4, purchased in june 18. First lock to go was o/s rear, door locked but would not open (Dec 18). Next was drivers door (Dec 19). Now n/s rear, this however has decided to correct itself for the time being. The first 2 lock mechanisms were replaced by local specialist. Volvo know about the problem & extended the warranty to 4yrs, after that you are on your own. I believe same problem affects S & V60s maybe others. This has put us off newer model volvo,s. Its an expensive fix as potentially all 5 locks can fail. Should have been a recall.

Door locking problems

This fixed it for me.:

1- on the central control panel, press Settings.

2- on display, choose Car Settings.

3- Choose Lock Settings.

You then have a choice You can choose "all doors unlock" or "driver door, then all". Whichever it is set to, change it to the other setting and try locking / unlocking the car as normal. This certainly worked for me. I also found that, having got the locks working again, I could revert to the original settings and all was well. This happened two years ago and all is still good.

Hope this works for you.

Cliff.

V40 Rear Doors

2013 V40 D2. Rear Doors wouldn’t open from the inside or out & quoted by Volvo £650 to fix - new locks, inner & outer cards & labour.
As such managed to take off the outer card - remove 2 star screws from under the handle. Prize off the cover to the upper mid post, pull back the door seal to access the covered screw that faces the mid post & remove the screw with a small 90deg star stubby screwdriver. The small plastic cover to the rear of the window pulls off. The card lifts up and releases from its holding clips. Loosen the 2 electrical plugs and the door catch pull wire. Card off - no damage. Take the Rubber seal that the pull wire passes through out and slide up the cable. Loosen the 3 bolts towards the back of the inner card thus allowing enough slack to pull back slightly. Shine a small torch into the pull wire hole & u can just see part of the lock mechanism. I managed to put a small hook on the end of a wire coat hanger and use it to catch the lock, pull it towards the hole whilst at the same time pulling the door latch connection - bingo. Door open for the first time in 6 months. Lots of lubrication added, mechanism slackened off and door put back together - repeated for other door. Job done - no damage & no £650 bill.

A big thank you for your detailed instructions on the fixing of stuck rear doors.

I worked a treat and with no damage or garage bill.

Once again thank you for taking the time to post these instructions.

V50 Rear door lock problem

Hi, I wonder if anyone can offer advice. My rear driver-side door lock developed a problem. Central locking stopped working and the door can only be opened by first pulling the internal lever (second pull doesn't open it) then using exterior door handle to open door. I managed to dismantle the door panel and door card, remove lock mechanism and replace with a working(?) one from a breakers. I tested the new mechanism before fitting and it all worked perfectly. I've fitted it and now the central locking will lock but not unlock (slight improvement) but the situation with the interior lever is exactly the same as before - I cant fathom what's going on! (plus its an epic job to take off and replace the door panels).
Any help or suggestions gratefully received.
Thanks -John

Make sure you lubricate your door locks to prevent them jamming.

My V40 had one rear lock replaced by Volvo (£260). The other rear door then jammed. I watched the Youtube video on removing the door car from the inside but I didn't do this.

Instead I pulled the outer door handle and sprayed lubricant in through the gap. Left it for an hour and locked/unlocked the car a few times pulling the handle and it opened again.

I then sprayed lubricant into all of the locks and so far no problems.
