Which code reader

Hi

Ive an 855R and I want to know which is the best code reader to get. I bought a U380 one which doesnt work :-(

Ive no ABS or TRACS I think the previous owner has removed the lamps or they have blown.

I want to read my codes just to get an idea whats wrong. Im thinking initially the ABS ecu needs resoldering . I might change the bulbs and try that anyway and see if it makes any difference .

What else might it be if its not the ECU?

Cheers Rich

Hi, I've got an 1998 v70r awd, and I'm using the elm327 interface with gendan engine check pro.
http://www.gendan.co.uk/product_ELM327.html

This needs a laptop, however I think they do a reader on it's own.
My car has an obd2 port, so you'd have to check which port you have.
Hope this helps.

Can this sowtware with interface work on '97 Volvo 850 with Motronic 4.3 & 4.4 ecu's?

I dont think 850s are OBD compliant, I know that it says OBD on the rubber plug above the port but I couldnt find a code reader to work, JOD makes or did make a flash code reader, he sent me one out for a very reasonable price and it worked a treat, I know the early 850s had a built in flash code reader but the later cars had a port under the ashtray and this is where you can use these flash readers JOD makes, hope this helps Steve

generally the 10v models are not OBD compliant, but the 20v ones are.

I recently bought vol-fcr cable from e-bay for my vol-fcr software version 1.3.Good news are that i can access to all ecu's in the car except engine ecu.

Vol fcr is designed ONLY for Motronic 4.4.
I thought that i have 4.4 but,according to my vol-fcr,i don't.

When i try to read the codes from Motronic 4.4 i get this message:
"Car is not responding.Make sure that key is in pos.II.Wait 3 sec and try again."

According to all investigations i did, including Wikipedia,i should have Motronic 4.4,because i'm sure that i don't have Jetronic.I have only 2 ecu's in ecu box.One for engine & the other for transmission.

I sent pm to JOD few days ago to hear his opinion about this but he didn't respond yet.Maybe he can point me to right direction,if he wants.

Is the car manual or auto?

scr8pdo Dec 31st, 2009 11:30

Sorry I meant to say 850s and even early 70s are not OBD2 compliant as it says on the rubber cover

It's automatic.

The car will have Motronic 4.4, I'd suggest there is a problem with the diagnostic connection (k line) to the engine ECU on your car.

Have a look at the wiring diagrams you can get here:

http://mojevolvo.pl/wiki/Volvo_850

Note that the diagnostic line to the engine ECU is switched by the immobilizer, there may be a problem with the connection or the immobilizer itself.
