Help on wiring Identification! - Early Instrument Cluster
 

Hi Guys,

After being informed that the voltage stabilizer on the back of the cluster is no longer available I have tried to replace it with a part from Maplin's. There is an old post on how to do this buried in the forum somewhere, however the post doesn't say which wire is which.

The Voltage stabilizer had three wires going to it..

A black wire and a red wire connected to the bottom of it, and a blue/green wire connected to it's casing.

We have identified the black wire as being the 12 Volt feed, but which is the low voltage out and which is the ground?

So to recap -

Black - Connected to bottom of stabilizer - 12 Volt Feed.
Red - Connected to bottom of stabilizer - Unknown.
Blue/green - Connected to body of stabilizer - Unknown.

All help appreciated on this as I really really want to get the car on the road, and this is about the only thing holding me back.

Ok, so I have my answers....

Black = 12v Feed
Red = 5v Feed (from stabilizer)
Blue/Green = Earth.

So after ordering a replacement cluster from Amazon cars we swapped various bits around and were able to make a good set.

But when we put it on the car the gauges still didn't work. So we tested the voltage out of the Maplin's thing that we built (detailed in another post) and it was only putting out 0.3v and not the 5v required.

So just to see what was happening we put the original voltage stabilizer back onto the cluster and B**ger me it worked!!!

So what I think happened was this.... 1) at the restorers the contacts to the gauges got too dirty to make good connections, 2) after being taken in and out over and over again the pins on the back of the dashboard stopped working.

Anyway, I now have a working temp gauge!!! Time for a brewski!

I did not ever pin out the Voltage regulator.
