If I seem to have OCD on this subject, it's because my previous car (a Honda Accord) destroyed it's engine through a sudden loss of oil pressure.

I will update as things change. I have a long drive ahead of me on Sunday.

Nothing wrong with being OCD about oil, it's rather important stuff. I am happy that modern technology makes our cars safer and greener but the cynic within me believes that the computerisation of vehicles also drives car owners into the pockets of the main dealerships when it comes to even basic maintenance. Silly I know:rolleyes:

Despite pointing slightly uphill, the electronic dipstick has become accessible. But no level is shown...

The Car Scanner app is now reporting just over 10mm for the oil level, so I don't think it's working. The car is giving no warning messages or lights when started.

Seems a daft system just to avoid having a dipstick. Probably fine when the cars are serviced within the main dealer network but outside of that, I can see the correct proceedure being followed most of the time.

Added just 0.25L before a 40 mile round trip... 2 hours later the electronic dipstick is reading maximum.

I call bull**** on the electronic dipstick.

I bet it will say max even if you put 100ml in but I could be wrong :-)

I decided on steps of 250ml, but I actually think you could be correct!

After the service and calibration the gauge takes just over 20 miles to get acquainted with the volume of oil in the sump and then attributes a value of 100% to its sensed Full reading ...

You can’t put exactly 5l In as you don’t know what was remaining in the first place. If a customer drives 40 miles and it’s in the workshop 15 minutes later the engine will be real hot and dump it’s oil. If someone pops down 5 mins to their local dealer and they stick it on the ramps a couple of hours later then you will get less out.

I notice with my vehicles a real blast and dump and the oil is clean for miles. Do it cold and it’s contaminated by the previous oil remaining.

Surely this is not beyond the wit of the most basic mechanic!

yes you can , and i'm trying to explain how to get it right because that's what i have been doing since 2014 when these electronic gauges came out .The level sensors have been there since 2006 but there was no dash readout as the engine had the mechanical dipstick .
.You drain the oil and filter when it is hot which is the correct way , hot 0w/20 oil has the consistency of petrol, it is thinner than water so all drained out in no time , maybe a couple of minutes until slow drips ... ... then you put exactly 5 litres back in and reset the dipstick and that's it until the next service ... This is the only way to do it at home assuming the same thing was done at the last service. Once the engine has been filled with 5 litres and the electronic gauge reset , the system knows that 5 litres is MAX , if you put 5 litres in next time the calibration will be good enough not to cause a problem , but if there is a problem, the gauge needs to be calibrated but what ever quantity of oil is in the sump at that time is taken to be MAX , that is why it is important to have exactly 5 litres in before calibrating .

yes it is actually ! Cars are becoming very specialised in all ways now , do any of us know how to do the oil levels on a new Ferrari? It's exactly the same..
