Diesel XC90 - Wastegate Stuck open ?

My wifes 2003 XC90 has just had to have the crank seal replaced at only 50k (I mention that in case its related) and we noticed that if we blip the throttle hard there is a dump valve noise coming from the air filter box.

A volvo specialist has had a look and thinks the wastegate is stuck open and thinks we need a new turbo.

Has anyone has an experience of this ?

It seems strange to me that the wastegate can't be freed up but I am only familiar with older petrol turbos.

Any advice welcome even if it only for a recon specialist.

I can have a word here with a guy I know that deals in turbos and recons. Appreciate its a bit far from you but might be able to find out summat for you in regard to the wastegate and point you in the right direction.

The wastegate as such is controlled by an electric motor they dont stick .. If there is a lack of power too , they have not fitted a boost pipe properly and it has blown off, take a look ...you may be able to refit it yourself .. failing that look for a split intercooler or a missing air filter ...

I keep getting different replies from different experts.

One says the noise isn't normal and is excess pressure and the power is reduced.

One says its normal and the power is fine.

It has been scanned by various machines - no fault codes as such but from reading live data some say there is a boost problem and others disagree.

If a few of you could report back what your diesel XC90 does that would be handy.

If you open the bonnet and blip the throttle to say 4000rpm as you lift off is there a noise like air escaping coming from the airbox ?

If you drive up the road with the window open as you accellerate and then lift in the course of normal driving can you hear the turbo whooshing ?

Thanks

What is it about about specialists & faulty turbo's ? if the wastegate was jammed open it would have about as much power as a moths f@rt right across the rev range. Sounds very much like a air leak at high boost. I suspect Cam's response is on the money here, especially as the car's had major surgery & the turbo's are very reliable

I've got a noise coming from my 2005 XC90 D5 when you ease off the revs. It sounds like a fan slowing down. I haven't experienced any loss in power or performance so I'm not sure what the noise is.

Is this an early symptom of this previously mentioned turbo problem, or is it something else? Car's due for its service in May, but should I be checking anything now? All power belts seem ok and aircon is working fine, so it's got me puzzled.
