does this look OK to you?

As per title.

Had CV joint replaced a couple months ago, today I was checking bushes etc, found this.
To my untrained eye it doesn't look healthy, but I think I'll better ask.

This ball joint doesn't look good (to me) at all. Seems like the rubber has split and the grease is gone.
I would replace it. Go for genuine Volvo or Lemförder.

Simmy Feb 9th, 2019 23:15

rubber boot disconected from lower ball joint wont last long like that .should be full of grease

Volvofreak2 Feb 10th, 2019 08:27

defnitly kaput. I also would recommend genuine or Lemförder (the Genuine parts are produced by Lemförder)

Hej Gernot :)

They are fun to do !!!!!! I would suggest you remove the complete front housing and change it on the bench in a vice. Ignore the you tube video's that show you how to do it on the car unless you have a 4 poster and can lift the car to chest level.
as long as the ABS sensor comes out its fine.
Good luck.

Now this is interesting..

Based on that YouTube material I was just about to attempt it on my drive...

What do you mean abs sensor?

Theres a wire going into the hub. You need to remove the 8 or 10mm boltthat keeps the sensor, then pry the sensor out from underneath using a flat screw driver. Do not pull on the wire at any time

Replaced many of volvo ball joints and not removed an abs sensor yet.

Right.. some research done..
resulting in more questions than answers..

the only part number that i have no trouble establishing is.. surprisingly front shock
it has part number stamped on it!
8667250
now.. no one seems to stock it :(

yes- it means that if i`m to do the job, i may as well do it properly and replace all tahts nearing the end of its life..

drop links
control arms (not that bad yet, but i can see some cracks on bushes developing)
shocks
ball joints
discs..

in between all the questions, few is kind of.. sticking out.
like a fork in a pile of sh..te

control arms
30635229+30635230
OR
36012457+36012458
??

having the number of oem part for shock (8667250) what is corresponding number in sachs book?

is the shock enough for replacement? i think not. so what upper mounting parts shall i be prepared for?

last thing i want to do is to strip it out and find out that i`m without the car for few days because i "forgot" to order some small part..

anyway, full(ish) parts list as i`m thinking of the job:
rear subframe bush (3507924)x1
rear subframe bush (3507923)x1
subframe bolt (985111)x4
front subframe washer (1397330)x2
engine pad (30748811)x1
bolt for engine pad (982819)x2
engine mount (8683931)x1
mount bolt 1 (985162)x1
mount bolt2 (987496)x1
ball joint set (274548)x2
control arm left (30635229 OR 36012457 TBC)x1
control arm right (30635230 OR 36012458 TBC)x1
droplink kit (31201602)x2
front shock (8667250)x2
now , do i need bits below? and maybe few more?
shock upper cover (9140068)x2
helper spring (8672087)x2

these arms and shock availability give me headache..

for arms i guess it will be best to just crawl underneath and check..
but where do i get the right shock?

and then biggest question of all..

assuming that everything holds as for now.. (that ball joint being in the worst condition out of all affected parts)..
for how long i can safely postpone the job?

week? month?

for real- possibly best for me would be to do the lot in July/August, but i dont think current ball jiont will last next 6 months/4000 miles..
quite sure it wont.

That's a lot of parts to replace. Why? Drive it until the ball joint starts to rattle or you get board some dry day, witch ever comes first. Then change the joint!
If it's not broke don't fix it
