Transfer box

V70 2001 2.4 petrol auto.
When going from reverse to drive or drive to reverse and moving the car there is a 'clunk' from front passenger side. A mechanic has checked it and seems to think it could be the transfer box.
There was an inner cv gaitor split that he discovered and replaced but that made no difference.
I'll try and post a video he sent while it was up on the lift.
What sort of cost should I be looking at, big job and can it be repaired or just replaced ?
Any advice, leave it or fix. Thanks

Ok, no idea how to upload a video from my pictures in the phone but it's a clunky noise from passenger side whilst moving a wheel

Just searching the net and it seems drive shat end bolts can come loose or need replacing?

Most likely the centre drive shaft bolt , you need a new one as they cant be used twice , Make sure you tighten it correctly using volvos angle torque method . Transfer boxes are for landrovers as far as i know :-)

Yes they can. The noise is called "axle ping".
Many will take a stab at simply retightening them.
Keep in mind that these two axle bolts (one on each side) are "stretch" bolts. They're tightened to a torque spec then an additional number of degrees.
This stretches them but embrittles them for subsequent use. In other words, they can break while you're attempting to reuse them.

On another note: You may want to assess the cleanliness of your transmission fluid. It's amazing how many softer clunks (from within the transmission) vanish when fluid is refreshed.

On yet another note: Carefully examine your engine mounts. A bad one can clunk going D to R or R to D.

Is this something a novice can replace or specialist. May sound stupid but does the driveshaft have to come out for this bolt to be replaced. Do you have a link for the bolts.
Thanks both for replying.a real help

Just jacked the front of the car up. Centre bolts look secure and wont tighten any more than it already is. I did notice that one side was 13mm and drivers side 14mm.
Drove around with the passenger window open and a rattle from the passenger side where the clunk comes from

was there any fine rust dust around the bolt indicating movement with the hub and driveshaft splines?
It could be something completely different of course , best get it checked at a garage familiar with volvos .

If you are getting a clunk when going from reverse to drive or drive to reverse it can be an indication of worn driveshaft splines.

When I replaced the driveshafts in my 2001 2.4 V70 (220Kmiles) a few months ago the clunk disappeared. It seemed more time efficient and a lot less messy to change the both shafts rather than just replace the CV joints on both sides as given the mileage I thought there might be some play in the splines. The replacement driveshafts from J&R (https://www.jandrcvjoints.co.uk/cata...ive-shafts-509) came supplied with new bolts.

Re the bolt head size, my T5 has 13mm N/S and 14mm O/S - I'm told the bolt head size spec was changed some years ago so maybe someone has replaced one of the bolts when a CV joint was changed.
