Help with acquired 440.
 
Hi all,

Im new to the forum, so Hello to you all!

I really need some help.

Ive been given a 440 1.9 Diesel, that i will be using for the winter. However, its been sat in a garage for a good 3 years, its probably been started once, but not driven once in those 3 years.

I know the battery needs changing as it wont charge. So this weekend i tried to jump start it off my regular car using jump leads - unfortunately it wont start. It doesnt even turn over.

I get lights on the dash, inc the glow plug light, all the electrics work (whilst connected to my car). I get a click from the starter motor (top right in the engine bay), but as i say the car doesnt even try to turn over. So is this a simple starter motor problem?

Any help appreciated.

That is your jump leads i would say , not being able to supply the large current needed . you could tap the starter on the back of the engine whilst the clicking is going on , if the brushes are stuck it will help .
You need to buy a new battery first though .

Thanks for the replay Clan.

Bit odd as the jump leads should have worked. Unless the battery on the Volvo is well and truely fu'bard to the point it wont even jump start with the leads.

I assume the car comes with an immobiliser from standard? If so how exactly do you disarm it. Is it done when you press the unlock button on the fob?

Just thought the immob could also be an issue.

I don't know what your jump leads are like but a lot are too thin for the job , if yours have a bit of weight behind them , they should be ok . ( Copper rather than Alluminium )
Yes the immobiliser turns off when unlocking with remote but comes on again when ignition is turned off so you may need to turn it off again with the remote when attempting to start .

Ok cool. I'll get the battery changed and see how the starter reacts then. Also some batteries for the fob cant hurt either.

Hi all,

Sorry still need help on this. Got a new battery for the car. ALl the electrics are working strong. However, again once i try to start it i just get a click. Now, i checked the fuses and noticed one for the immobliser - 10th one from the left 75amp fuse. I removed this and tried to start it again and the car actually turned over, i tried to start it a few times but it wasnt even attempting to fire, it was just turning over.

Could this still be the immobiliser preventing it from firing or something else. Cant see you being able to by pass the immobiliser simply by removing the fuse. But then it was odd that it turned over without the fuse, but it wouldnt with the fuse in place.

There is a red LED on the dash, but this isnt lit up. THe fob doesnt do anything. Ive put the batteries from the fob in a remote control i have for hte radio in my car and it worked - but then maybe there's power in the batteries to power the remote but not unlock/lock the car. Is the immobiliser deactivated when the doors are unlocked via the fob. There's no button or anything that i can see in the car and the previous owner (gfs grandad) said he didnt have to do anything with the immobiliser to start it.

Im considering getting the RAC out to it. But thought id check if anyone had any advice for me on here first.

you must have the remote working to unlock the immobiliser . again get some fresh batteries and see what happens , otherwise they may have lost their memory and need re coding to the car which is a grey area after 1995 models but can be done! There is a process with the push button diagnosic socket under the bonnet .

Will the keys lose their code if the battery goes dead? Would the car still turn over if the keys have lost their code, but not start?

Ive seen the procedure for the box under the bonnet.

No the starter is immobilised as well as the ECU .
fobs have been known to loose their matching with the car . not sure if the keyless entry system in the car would loose it , possibly after a long time with no power.

Ah so does that explain why when i remove the fuse the car will turn over but not start. Hmmm...

How much is it to get the keys reprogrammed?

oh and why no LED flashing on the dash?
