2014 XC60 D5 AWD oil change - K&N oil filter problem

I changed my oil on my 2014 XC60 2.4D AWD over Easter weekend and used a K&N oil filter - part number was HP-7010

https://www.knfilters.com/hp-7010-oil-filter

The filter indeed fits OK, but the o-ring supplied was too fat for the oil filter cap and would jam / get dislodged when attempting to refit the oil filter cap. The o-ring on the oil filter housing cap was a skinny o-ring about half the diameter of the K&N o-ring. As shown in the picture on the K&N website the filter comes with both and o-ring and some other sort of sealing ring which seemed unnecessary as i could not find it fitted on my car.

Out of interest I looked at another oil filter (Sakura brand EO31070) which was also specified by my local parts place as suitable for the XC60 D5 and it had the same issue - o-ring supplied is too fat and also the other seemingly unnecessary sealing ring.

I just fitted the new filter and re-used the original o-ring fitted to the oil filter housing cap.

This has confused me a bit. Why are two different companies supplying an 0-ring that seems too fat? What is the other sealing ring being supplied for?

I looked up the Mann oil filter online and it does not seem to come with an o-ring for the filter housing cap, but it does come with the other mystery sealing ring.

Any comments / advice appreciated.

The sealing ring you should have fitted is the one with the little tab on that sits inside the filter cap. You pull on the tab to remove it. The little original black oring never gets changed. In the genuine Volvo filter box you get the sealing ring with the tab on and that is it. You leave the tiny oring in place.

Fit quality parts, the Mann kit is what i would use from what you have listed. The sealing ring it comes with is the correct one and all you need.

One seal needed iirc. Goes into the the top of the filter housing cap with the little tab pointing up as you look into it when fitting. Use long nose pliers to remove the old one using the little tab to get purchase. See vid below...

A genuine Volvo filter insert is only £14 so why bother with anything else? I think the Volvo filter may also come with a sump plug washer.

Thanks

Thanks guys for the info / explanations and the link to the video.

I will order some Mann filters in from overseas for my next oil change.
(K&N / Sakura are ones I can access at short notice locally)
