Number plates

Hi,

I seem to remember reading years ago that Volvo used numbers on their demonstrators which related to the car model, so a 122 might have 122 in the plate, a 123gt might have 123 etc etc. I ask because I have a 131 with the plate NRO 131H, and I'm just curious as to whether this was a thing or not.

Thanks,

Dave

I have seen some of the sales reps cars like that.

My brother has a 240 with the number 240 and the local area letters, used to be the sales managers personal car

ok..maybe it was something they thought about then.

Yes but it is something the dealers would have chosen to do rather than Volvo

Oh that's interesting. I have 221 on my estate.

...and have 164 on my Volvo 164: I have seen and photographed a couple more 164s having 164 on their plates so it seems quite a few did this trick.

JCB used to buy reg numbers with JCB for their reps and sales staff.

Back then, local over the counter car tax offices were more flexible and would often agree to give you a number that you asked for if it was available. Also not unusual to register a car out of the locality to get the letter combo you wanted.
