Volvo 340 idle speed adjustment

I have a 1988 volvo 340 GLE 1.7 RHD which seems to be idling too fast approx 1300 rpm when up to operating tempreture. The choke is fully pushed in and it starts very well from hot and cold. If it is a matter of turning a screw on the carb which one is it, which way should i turn it to reduce the idling speed and what idle speed am i looking to reduce it too.

Many thanks in advance Rob

RE: Volvo 340 idle speed adjustment

I bet that the choke is still coming on, remove the air filter and then the three bolts securing the housing on. Where the choke cable enters the carb, there is a spring clip. With the engine completely cold, the choke should be set so that with the choke completely off, ie: with the choke flap open, the choke control inside the car should be just springing out a little bit. Check that the choke indicator doesn't come on by putting on the ignition. The choke knob will then withdraw as the engine warms and expands the cable. Leaving this slack will then ensure that the cable doesn't drag the choke on when it isn't wanted and raising the idle speed.

If that doesn't fix it, come back and I'll tell you how to adjust the actual idle.

Andy
