Imported a 780 Coupe

Hi

I've imported a US spec 780 and am in the process of getting it UK registered.

Its a 1990 built car, 2.3 Turbo Auto in Burgundy with cream leather.

Pretty much everything seems to work on it with the exception of the Stereo/Amp, which may be down to a poor battery or blown fuse/circuit (the car had to be started with jump leads as the battery was flat from the crossing).

The sun visors have illuminated mirrors and the flip-up covers have broken off, both are with the car, but I think the easiest solution may be a swap - I think they are from a 760/960...?

I want to replace the Volvo badges on the front wings with side repeater indicators (as per Euro spec) and at some point change the headlamps from US to Euro units, though they will have to be used units as new ones are serious £££!

I'll post pictures once I get it cleaned and registered - all things considered, I am *very* pleased with my first Volvo!

Sounds fantastic, exactly the engine, colour and interior I would like if I got a 780.

Cant wait to see the pictures.

Thanks James

Is there anyone on here who might be able to help find a pair of Euro 780 headlamps?

I am guessing from a car breaker, Italy is probably the most likely source as there were a fair few of the Euro cars sold there?

I am struggling to find an Italian Car Breaker who has a website I can search for 780.

NoS could be an option, have you tried the obvious - Volvo ?

Possibly the best looking coupé of the 80s, and definitely the best colour (418 - Regency Red Metallic)!
As for headlights, Italy or Sweden are your best bet!

Good effort all round - I hope you bring it to meets and shows this year and next :)

Cheers

Even with EU spec headlamps, you'll have to use beam deflectors, it's a shame there were never any RHD 780s as then the headlamp answer would be obvious.
Did the 780 use the same headlamp shell as the rest of the range? If so then a set of UK spec headlamps would be the best option - correct dip so won't look out of place with beam deflectors stuck on!

Nah the 780's were unique - "thinner" than the 740's - hence why they're so rare :\

Would installing them"upside down" work to angle the beam to the left?

Cheers

Shame and no, it definitely wouldn't! :err: It's all done with the lenses and the bulb socket which is angled slightly - the bulb will sit perfectly level in terms of comparison to the rest of the car but rotationally in the headlamp reflector, it's usually a few degrees to the right for UK models and a few to the left for LHD models.

Also it's not so much a case of "angling" the beam to the left, more a case of diverting light from the right - all done with the reflector, bulb position and lens.

Not to mention the crux of the issue then Dave, the elephant in the idea. Upside down would angle the beam upwards away from the road and in to oncoming drivers' eyes !!!!! EEEEEEEK !!!

It sounds like a wow car. Cushti. :)
