1977 Volvo 240 Silver Anniversary Limited Edition
Owned for 10 years and maintained pretty much regardless of cost. This year approx £3,500 spent on new parts, (too many to list but include water pump, battery, cam belt, complete exhaust system, brake master cyl etc etc.)
All rust excised from body panels, new metal welded in and rust-proofed. Complete re-spray to original Volvo factory spec including the unique black and gold Volvo 'go faster' stripe. All doors recently removed, reveals and door shuts re-painted, all original solid brass badging "Volvo 1927-1977". Clean blue velour interior, good sound system, CD player etc. 123,000 miles only. Lots of old MOTs to confirm genuine mileage. Taxed to March 2014, MOT to July 2014. Probably the nicest example of this extremely rare vehicle on the market today. Seems to me that a value of £5K+ is somewhat excessive for a car that needed rusty panels being cut out and repairs welded in. Plus lots of new parts that suggest the car has been in a very tired and worn out state in its recent past. I think you need a highly original, low mileage, totally immaculate vehicle to get anywhere near your asking price and even then doubt you could achieve it. Real top dollar for a 240 is around £3500 and I don't think many on here would want to pay that much. What one spends on restoration has little bearing on the final value of the car and in my experience outlay is rarely recovered. The right car in terrible condition can be worth a fortune, Bugatti for example. The wrong car in perfect condition can be not worth a carrot. Austin Allegro for example. Unhappily in actual monetary value any Volvo is nearer the Allegro end of the scale than the Bugatti end. Although strangely I have always loved Volvos. |

240's are starting to fetch better money than they used to. Some of the very low millage cars in good shape have been selling for £1500 to just over £2000 from what I have seen recently. The Jubilee is a little more special and a very good one should fetch more. I am not aware of any UK 240 that has sold for anywhere near the £5000 region. As with any classic car you never see back what you spend on repairs.
It does look like a very nice example from the photos and deserves to go to a loving home. Best of luck with selling it and hope the right buyer does come along for you. I would like a Jubilee model myself just can not justify and more cars built after 1972 |
