Fuel consumption

Hello Everyone

I've recently bought a 2014 M/Y XC70 D5 geartronic (215 BHP), 55,000 miles. My other XC70 D5 geartronic, 2005 M/Y (163 BHP), 178,00 miles, regularly turns in overall consumption figures around 44 mpg. The 'new' one struggles to reach 37mpg on similar routes, same driving style etc- this is obviously disappointing! I've tried the basics, increasing tyre pressure for example, without result. The supplying (Volvo main) dealer says there is nothing that can be adjusted. I wonder if anyone has a similar experience or any ideas? I'd hoped a newer car with a 6th gear would be at least as economical as 'Old Faithful'!

Many thanks

James

44mpg? Wow, that's good. It is calculated, isn't it?

The old 163bhp 2004 is capable of 55 mpg quite easily the best D5 in my opinion . minimal emission gear .. what is your average speed on the fuel computer with the new car?

Mainly taken from the computer but I check/ calculate from tine to time and it seems about right...

average SPEED …(not mpg ) must be at least 40 mph to be economic ...

I reset the recorder just before a recent 1600 mile trip through France, so mainly motorway and A-road driving and it's reading 56 mph average speed, 37mpg for the trip. With that kind of run I'd hope for better consumption?

I would have thought so , unless you went over 70 mph of course , that causes havok as wind resistance rapidly multiplies over around 65 mph.
If you were to stick at 60 mph for 100 miles I would expect good consumption . Living in a hilly area is a killer too .

I don't buy that in an XC70. 55mpg quite easily, no, can't see that, even on the notoriously inaccurate display!

OP, the later model may be telling true, but the earlier one is almost certainly lying. Do a brim- brim calculation across a tank.

Mine shows 43 to 46 mpg on the display and when I calculate it brim to brim I get 35 to 38 mpg. 148k, Euro 3 D5 XC70 averaging 38 to 44 mph. I do c. 400 miles/week.
