I finally got round to fitting my new radiator. The old one was held together at the bottom with a VW Polo window clamp
https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7360/2...8e3fabb8_b.jpg and one of the mounting lugs had failed https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7278/2...9e6bc290_b.jpg leaving the radiator hanging squint https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7316/2...87827d0d_b.jpg It all started well enough https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7472/2...453208a6_b.jpg but then it became apparent that every single fixing was going to fight me. The captive nut on the remaining bracket escaped and I took the headlamp unit out for better access. https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7304/2...63e6bf37_b.jpg Which didn't help so I had to smash the other mount off. Finally I got the radiator out https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7762/2...120ef6dd_b.jpg The new radiator came with two of the six clips needed to mount the intercooler and aircon radiator. None of the original clips were salvaged so I had to raid the scrap V70 for the rest, which wasn't a five minute job. Eventually I got it all back in, with a CV boot clip on the top hose for now. https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7409/2...a45c2010_b.jpg It's slightly galling that the new radiator is invisible after all that effort, at least I don't have to worry about the whole thing falling out. It was a massive palaver to do, not a job I want to repeat in a hurry. |

Swapped out front passenger side bearing/hub as it was beyond shagged. Treated the girl to new air filter and reapplied copper slip to the brake pads as they were a bit squeaky.
Also rear bumper mounting plates turned up today but waiting til i can source a tow bar to do both jobs at the same time. Ps ref the bearing how much of a **** is it when you realise the only allen key size you dont have is 7mm and cant get the caliper off |
When I did the radiator last weekend I found out that there should be an undertray/ air guide. I was passing U-Pull-It yesterday and popped in on the off chance that they might have an 850 in. 850s, like most 90s cars, are now at the point where they have stopped appearing in scrap yards but they did have one in.
Amazingly it had the bit I needed. It also had a set of moulded mats, so I bagged them too. They were dirtier than the undertray and will be getting a damn good scrub before they go in the car. https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7098/2...451bea70_b.jpg |
Gave the C70 a final polish and buff today. Have already deep cleaned the interior, washed and proofed the hood, clayed, gently compounded, black hole glazed the paintwork and finally today gave her a coat of Poorboys carnauba wax. The only thing to do now is under the bonnet, but that can wait.
Had a little time left so tidied up the fuse box by turning quite a few fuses round so the rating numbers all face the same way. Incidentally all the fuses are genuine Volvo as the numbers are in Volvo font and every fuse has a little smear of silicone grease on the blades. It was too wet to take her out today, so she will have to wait for a couple of weeks when we go down to Norfolk for a long weekend. |
Hey Richard_TD have you got this bit
Gotta love the bottom of your receiver. Cymraeg, dude, http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/pictur...pictureid=9765 just leave the pins in, and unbolt the bracket off, with the caliper still on. I self consumingly hate the rubbish aftermarket fuses today http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/pictur...pictureid=9764 and raided a couple of handfuls from the wrecker last week and a puller thing. |

Another thing I don't have is any kind of grille for the hole under the number plate. I know such a thing exists but I was wondering if it's omitted on the TDi to maximise air flow to the intercooler. I'm in two minds whether to replace the dryer. I've done without A/C for the 2 1/2 years I've had the car, but it would be nice to have it working for the sake of £25 and a Kwikfit "no fix no fee" recharge. I'm very close to having everything working on the car so I might do it. |
Yeah, that's the top bit of the let's say "funnel" that channels air up
through the radiators, after it enters through the missing honeycomb thing. So see the tabs in the radiator support panel below each horn it clips to those then curves forward to the top of the honeycomb thing, yeahhhh. Go back to the breaker man yeahhhh. Don't mind me I'm just singing |
